One of my very favorite blue sky photos: twenty years ago, hiking in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, marveling at glacial-blue lakes and wildflowers in the rugged Andes. Such an amazing place.

A green hill covered in grassland in front of the Paine Massif. The peaks are partly covered in snow and partly obscured by clouds. The three Torres can be seen on the right. All of it nicely illuminated by sunlight breaking through the clouds.

This image shows a small group of young guanacos standing among dry shrubs and grasses in Chile’s Patagonia region. The guanacos have slender necks, long legs, and light brown fur with white undersides. Their soft, woolly coats contrast against the rugged, scrubby landscape that surrounds them. The scene is lit by natural sunlight, highlighting the textures of their fur and the earthy tones of the Patagonian terrain — a mix of browns, yellows, and muted greens. The guanacos appear alert and calm, perfectly blending into their arid, windswept habitat.

Scientific name: Lama guanicoe
Family: Camelidae (same family as llamas, alpacas, and camels)
Habitat: Found mainly in arid and semi-arid regions of South America, particularly in Patagonia (Chile and Argentina), as well as parts of Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay.
Range: From sea level up to about 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) in the Andes.

 Physical Characteristics
Size: Adults are about 1.0–1.2 meters (3.3–4 feet) tall at the shoulder and can weigh between 90–140 kg (200–310 lbs).

Appearance: Slender bodies, long necks, and large eyes. Their coat is light brown to cinnamon on top with white underparts and a grayish face.
Adaptations: They have thick, warm wool adapted to cold, windy environments.

Behavior and Ecology
Social Structure: Live in family groups — usually one dominant male, several females, & their young (called chulengos). Bachelor males form separate groups.
Diet: Herbivores that graze on grasses, shrubs, & lichens. They can survive on sparse vegetation and obtain much of their water from the plants they eat.
Predators: The main predator is the puma (mountain lion). Guanacos rely on keen eyesight & speed (they can run up to 55 km/h or 35 mph) to escape.

Conservation Status
IUCN status: Least Concern, but populations are fragmented.
Threats: Habitat loss, hunting for meat and fiber, and competition with livestock.
Protection: They are protected in several reserves & national parks.

As an aside, I've seen those very saplings in the photo -- a reforestation effort in #torresdelpaine national park after a careless camper set a devastating wildfire. In that climate, it will probably take a thousand years to recapture the carbon lost in a few weeks' fire.
