I wore the dead preacher's face to hunt his monsters. There was a big fake TV smile plastered over that face as the man opened the front door of his home to me. He was white, tall, and about 35. He looked like a soccer coach with spiked brown hair and neatly trimmed mustache. It was early evening, not quite dusk, but he was wearing a polo shirt and dark slacks. I greeted him brightly. "Hi! Robert, right?" Robert was shocked to see Reverend Billy Strafford standing on the concrete steps leading to his modest 3-bedroom home. I could feel it in his mind and I could see it on his face. It made sense though. Strafford was the spiritual and executive leader of Ramparts of Hope, the "prosperity outreach" church Robert and his wife attended. So Strafford showing up on Robert's doorstep was a bit like a surprise visit from the Pope. "Reverend!" Robert managed to get out. I felt his surprise turn to pride and joy; favor from the patriarch. "This is such an honor! What could you possibly be doing here?" "Oh, I'm just here to visit. Is Trisha here? You're doing such important work with the children, I wanted to meet you myself and say thanks." Two years before I showed up to their home in suburban Virginia, Robert and Trisha Gaines had enrolled in Ramparts' foster parenting program. Ostensibly one of the church's numerous charities, it partnered with government agencies in seven states to place short and long term fosters with upstanding members of the church community. They took in thousands of traumatized children in need of a stable, caring home. And by the reverend's own accounting, had sold 138 of them into domestic and sexual slavery to the American elite.
