“The Border Patrol operation is not interfering with firefighting activity and Bear Gulch firefighters continue to make progress on the fire.”

I have sent an email to the incident command team (CA IIMT 7) on the Bear Gulch Fire asking about the arrests of firefighters by Border Patrol, their status, and guidance re possible future USBP action. I’ll share any updates I get.

## High fire danger for Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon Wednesday An upper level trough diving south through British Columbia is bringing a westerly surge of winds to Washington and Oregon on Wednesday as it cuts off the influence of high pressure offshore. East of the Cascades, temperatures will not drop enough today to raise the relative humidity substantially. The resulting dry wind will generate high fire danger in the Inland Northwest Wednesday afternoon and evening. Various National Weather Service offices have issued red flag warnings for this risk, stretching from the Okanogan Valley to Klamath Falls. > _Ingalls Weather thanks the support it gets from donors. Please consider making a small donation_at this link _to help me pay for the website and access to premium weather data._ Pressure gradient between Portland and Hermiston. One of the best ways to see this pattern is to look at the west-to-east pressure gradient. During the heat wave a thermal trough was oriented along the coast and Columbia River leading to offshore winds in B.C. and Northern Washington and minimal winds through the Columbia Gorge. Cooler air moving into the region shifts the warm surface low eastward leading to onshore winds. The Cascades act as a dam, blocking the air from moving eastward. It gets channeled through specific mountain gaps (Columbia Gorge, Snoqualmie Pass, etc.) so that areas downwind of these gaps get strong winds. Type your email… Subscribe As of 10:00 Wednesday winds are gusting to around 25 mph (40 km/h) near Hermiston and 30 mph (50 km/h) near Ellensburg. We may see wind speeds tick up a little more into the afternoon but the main story from this point will be the dropping relative humidity. Widespread humidity values below 20% are forecast this afternoon with the driest area coming in around 12-15% from Pendleton to Moses Lake around 15:00. Any fires that start in these conditions will move eastward rapidly. Humidity rises as temperatures cool overnight but aggressive fire behavior is possible into the late evening. Elevated fire danger is expected again tomorrow downwind of the Columbia Gorge and Snoqualmie Pass but winds will be a little lighter and humidity will be a little higher. HRRR modeled wind gusts for 12:00 Wednesday. (Windy) These westerlies are showcasing the impact some of the large volcanoes have on wind flow patterns. Much like a large rock in a shallow stream, the volcanoes create an area of disturbed wind flow on their leeward side. In many cases this manifests as calmer winds with more variable wind direction. We call this a mountain wake and it is clearly visible in the HRRR data shown above, downwind of Mount Adams, Mount Hood, and Mount Jefferson. Mountain waking was one of the more difficult aspects of forecasting wind energy output in the eastern Columbia Gorge when I did this for work living in Portland. Looking ahead, a cold front is forecast to sweep through the region on Saturday. It will stall out before moving across the Cascades to produce an atmospheric river event on the west side on Friday. Don’t expect a lot of rainfall out of this east of the Cascades. Rain will help to lower wildfire risk but could be a problem for some farmers this time of year. The driest area will be along Highway 97 north of Yakima whereas the Tri-Cities, Spokane, and Bend can look forup to a quarter inch (6 mm). An isolated thunderstorm or two is possible in the Blue Mountains and north of Spokane. _The featured image is HRRR modeled relative humidity for 15:00 Wednesday. (Windy)_ #orwx #wawx #Weather

Not terribly surprising, but most of Washington is highlighted by NIFC for above normal wildland fire potential by July. A good reminder that wildfire season is just around the corner, so a good time to prepare is now! #wawx #wafire
