Our Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' in its first winter with us. This is a variegated variety that provides year-round interest in the border. ❣️ #bloomscrolling #gardening #shrub #winter #wintercolor #winterinterest

A striking contrast emerges where
a glistening evergreen bough, cloaked in ice,
meets an earthy brown carpet of Longleaf Pine straw.

Where once ivory blossoms danced in the light,
Now, cinnamon-hued seed pods are encased in ice.
Blanketed in winter’s rime,
the future sleeps secure.
And the crystal-veil will melt in time
to reveal spring’s allure.

Saturday Symphoricarpos living up to its ‘Coralberrry’ common name. Such a beautiful late season pink!

I guess i’m staying up tonight to feed the wood stove. I took this with my headlamp and my iPhone, I really need to get a camera again; really hate this digital stuff.

Well, I put my boots on, almost slipped on the ice going down our front steps, shivered in the cold—all to get a better pic of the azalea in the snow. Isn’t it gorgeous? Love the contrast and unexpected winter interest it’s giving. #winterinterest #bloomscrolling #garden #azalea #lovingit

More snow came our way the last 48 hours. I’m particularly surprised by how lovely the seed pods of the azalea look in the snow! #garden #winterinterest #bloomscrolling

More snow. More ice. But then we got this little native grass holding up its end of the “winter interest” deal in the garden 😍 #garden #winterinterest #nativeplants

The winter foliage of Gaultheria is almost black due to frigid temperatures. It will turn green again in spring. It still has a few red berries which the birds will enjoy.

The branches of the yellow twig dogwood in winter: Cornus sericea ‘Flaviramea’. Spring bulb foliage is starting to emerge from the ground. “Cornu” is the Latin for “horn”, referring to the hardness of the wood. And “sericea” is Latin for “silky”, referring to the fuzzy hairs on the leaf surfaces.

Cornus sericea ‘Flaviramea’ (yellow twig dogwood) is a lovely addition to the winter interest garden and works well planted in mass. 🌱 #NativePlants 🌿💚 #greenheart #WinterInterest #PollinatorPlants

Mixed woods seen from the car on a morning with fog lingering in some places, this view is lightly fogged with more in distance. The deciduous trees are nearly white with a few dark spruce trees rising above. Farther back to the right, another stand is even more obscured by fog. In front of the woods is a band of open pasture, mostly snow covered with bits of faded orange-gold grass poking through. Closer yet to the camera is a wider area of taller dry grass standing mostly above the snow cover, though bent and mounded, and lightly coated with frost/snow. White vignetting.

A single dried flower stem enters the image from just below centre right, angling slightly upward and reaching around the centre. A couple of narrow pointed leaves can be seen on the stem and a cluster of tiny round seeds where the flowers used to be. The stem is roughly parallel to the ground which is covered in fluffy white, slightly violet shadowed snow, as is the top side of the stem, especially the wider seed-bearing section. The day is a bit gloomy, but a little sun is hitting the snow, causing some scattered crystals to shine like tiny tiny moons in different phases!
