What caused the Irish Famine? There is no simple answer to this. In addition to the blight, ideological blindness, moralism, prejudice, and the Poor Law all had a role

Bury Union Workhouse, 1899.
The same Bury Union Workhouse, now an 'Institute', 1928. Over time some workhouses evolved into care establishments and hospitals, even becoming founding members of the NHS.
About one in ten #British natives have ancestors who found themselves in a #Workhouse at some point, that terrifying institutional system born of the Black Death and often codified into law over the centuries.
Today's map (Bury East, 1928) is a reminder of this sad fact.

'Applicants for Admission to a Casual Ward' was created in 1874 by Luke Fildes. It shows people lining up for admission into a workhouse. This would only be for one night.

In 1843 at Uppingham, an assistant to the surgeon took out the heart of a pauper lying in the dead-room at the poor-house.
He concealed it in his pocket and afterwards delivered a "lecture" upon it before the Oddfellows' lodge at a public-house.

'Silver' circular badge with dark blue enamel. The outer ring is embellished (possibly a laurel wreath). Within that is a dark blue enamel ring inscribed ' Bridgend General Hospital, Gorau Golud-Iechyd'. According to Google Translate the latter is Welsh for 'Best Wealth-Health'. The centre is a cut out textured cross, at the very centre superimposed is an oil lamp (aka Nightingale lamp) with a yellow enamel flame at its centre. If anyone knows if the Welsh translation is accurate I'd love to know!

Had a great excuse this week to revisit a workhouse.
Limavady (or Newtownlimavady) was opened in 1842 as a medium model capable of holding 500 paupers.
It is now better known in the area as Roe Valley Hospital where some outpatient services are still in operation.

Pretty (and expensive!) cottages today, you'd never guess it was once a grim 18th century workhouse.
