The banging intensifies. A gruff voice calls my name from outside.
“We’re not done here.” I wait until she nods before getting up to answer the door. There’s no rule against me being in her room, but this will probably earn me a lecture from the general. Swinging the door open, I find a red-faced Elias. He glances past me, mouth tightening into a thin line when he sees Nora.
“Were you looking for her or for me?”
Over Elias’ shoulder, I see Cael standing sheepishly in his doorway. He grimaces before mouthing, “Sorry.”
“You weren’t in your room. Your friend Cael seemed to think I might find you in hers.”
I don’t like the way his gaze narrows on Nora, and I move to block his view. His jaw clenches.
“You have orders to come with me.”
“Whose orders?”
“You’ll get more information when we get there. It pertains to the incident with the acoustic device.”
“Was there something wrong with the code?”
He gives an exasperated sigh, fists clenching, turning to find Cael still standing in the doorway, eagerly listening in.
“No,” he grunts through clenched teeth. “There’s nothing wrong with the code. The suspect in question asked for you specifically, Abernathy. He won’t talk to anyone but you.”
“Why me?”
“Will you just please—” He gestures toward the hall, obviously annoyed by my hesitation.
I’m usually good about following orders, but it’s going to take an act of God to get me away from Nora now that I’ve gotten a taste. “Can’t it wait until tomorrow?”
“It’s Zane. The suspect we have in custody is Zane.”
A million thoughts fly through my brain at once, but when I turn toward Nora, they all disappear. Because the look on her face—
It’s a look that makes me afraid I’ve lost her all over again.
Had to use vibes today and went with “block” instead of “impede.” A #WIPSnips from ✨The Annora Project✨ #writingcomunity #writesky
Poor Fynn—nothing like an almost kiss with the girl you’ve been in love with for years.
