A pic of a Sholes & Glidden typewriter (as it was called) when it debuted in 1874. It's cool looking, a black typewriter with various yellow flower designs on the front & sides and a cover that goes over the keyboard for when it's not in use.

Johannes Gutenberg (c1395-1406) developed an oil-based ink for use with his printing press as the previous water-based inks simply slid off his metal typefaces. He experimented with red inks as well as the very even black ink that became standard. #writinghistory #ink #printinghistory #history

It is a problematic ink as the presence of iron leads to corrosion which causes both the ink and the paper (or parchment) to deteriorate with time as pictured here. #writinghistory #ink #history

The development of fountain pens saw the problem of ink leakage (and staining fingers) becoming a problem and by the late 1890s inventors were producing "safety pens". One of the first was George Safford Parker who released the Parker Jointless in 1898. #pen #fountainpen #history #writinghistory

A crucial component of any office is a pen; that is, a writing implement with its own reservoir of ink. The earliest known pen dates back 1,000 years and was found in Ireland while the earliest record of such a pen dates back to 973 and the Arabian world. #pen #fountainpen #history #writinghistory
