A photo of a Zebra Jumping Spider. Fun fact: These are a type of spider that, as a male and female spider meet, the male will begin it's courtship dance. The dance involves waving their front legs, and moving their abdomen up and down. The better the dance the more likely the male will get lucky!

Zebra Jumping Spider Salticus scenicus, of the family Salticidae. Spotted this little chap at one of my local Reserves several years ago. It was very curious, and ceased what it was doing to find out what I was up to.

Zebra spider facing downward on a red background. They're typically black and white, but this one is mostly brown with a couple tan stripes on each side of its abdomen. The thorax and head do appear black, with a couple of white strips on the outer edge of the thorax and a couple of white spots on top. The eight legs are dark. The pedipalps (limbs) are white. It's hard to tell in this photo, but zebra spiders have eight eyes.

My mom isn’t a fan of this shot. I keep reminding her that the zebra spider appears larger than it is in real life. Those little jumping spiders are little and fast so it wasn’t an easy shot to get!

A tiny Zebra Jumping Spider on the reverse of a honeysuckle leaf, with an even smaller spider that she has caught and killed. The Zebra Spider is about 6mm long, with vague brown and white stripes on her abdomen. She has one horizontal white stripe and one black one around the edge of her carapace, and the top is marked with black and white patches. She has eight eyes - four along the front of her cephalothorax, and two on each side. The two middle front ones are especially large. Her legs are mottled in black, brown and white. Though she's quite hairy, her colours are produced by scales, like those on a butterfly's wing, rather than by hairs, and as a result she is slightly iridescent.

A tiny Zebra Jumping Spider, about 6mm long, with a small fly she has caught and is eating. She is standing on a brightly lit honeysuckle leaf. She is cream, with brown and black patterns on her cephalothorax and abdomen that vaguely resemble stripes. Her legs are mottled. Her two large central eyes are looking down towards her prey, of which only the iridescent wings can now be seen.

March 2nd: a Zebra Spider with one of two small flies she caught just seconds apart, and then ate within a few minutes.
