The #BBC was not #antifascist. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1938 #JoachimVonRibbentrop was on a visit to Britain to ensure #appeasement continued, when he met with the Beeb's director #JohnReith. Reith, an ardent admirer of #Hitler & #Nazism, offered to fly the #swastika over BBC HQ.
Natürlich bin ich sehr froh, dass die Intiative zur Demontierung des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunks in der Schweiz krachend gescheitert ist.
Aber: mit der freiwilligen Kürzung des Beitrags um 10% (von 335 auf 300 CHF) hatte die Initiative längst einen Teilerfolg in der Tasche. #Appeasement

Dann am Tage selbst die Meldung: Der Führer sei unvermutet um soundso viel Uhr »an der Stadtgrenze Saarbrückens erschienen«. Rundfunk hat mitgeteilt, er fliege nach Frankfurt, fahre von dort aus ... dann ist er in Mannheim gelandet und in Auto verladen worden. Natürlich längste In- und Auslandsberichte über den ungeheuren Volksjubel, die Begeisterung etc. Und: »Adolf Hitler fuhrt selber die Saar heim!« - Als ob nicht ohne ihn die Saar mit Selbstverständlichkeit an Deutschland gefallen wäre und ohne daß irgendwer an den Status quo gedacht hätte. Aber nun ist es ein Sieg des Nationalsozialismus.
Diary entry of March 4, 1935 The program for the Saar celebration ("Homecoming" on March 1, was laid down in every detail. Then on the day itself the announcement: At such and such a time the Fuhrer "has unexpectedly arrived at Saarbriicken city boundary." Radio let it be known, he is flying to Frankfurt, proceeding from there then he landed in Mannheim and transferred to car. Of course lengthy home and foreign reports on the tremendous popular jubilation, the enthusiasm, etc. And: "Adolf Hitler in person is bringing the Saar home!" - As if without him the Saar would not as a matter of course have fallen to Germany and without anyone having a thought for the status quo. But now it is a victory for National Socialism.
