The large irregular is (I believe) a Hemiaster sp., collected from a gravel pit in Fort Worth. The regular piece, probably Phymosoma sp., picked up from a residential development in the Killeen, TX area.

Collecting Echinoids (Sea Urchins) in North Jutland, Denmark Today, we have an interesting guest post from long-time ESCONI member Marie Angkuw. Marie is part of the Lyme Regis Babes as John Catalani has named them. Marie, Rhonda Gates, Jann Bergsten, and Deborah Lovely have taken numerous trips to Europe to collect fossils. They've been to Lyme Regis (multiple times), Whitby, Yorkshire, and the Isle of Wight. This time it was Marie, Jann, and Rhonda on a trip to Denmark to collect echinoids!

The Eccentric Sand Dollar (Dendraster excentricus) is a cousin of sea urchins and sea cucumbers. It uses tiny spines to scoot along or burrow into the sand. This shows its exoskeleton — you might find washed up on the beach.

More irregular echinoids, including examples (5 & 6) commonly known as dollar shells.

Irregular echinoids. 8 = Spatangus sp.

Always something immensely satisfying about irregular #echinoids. These from the #MuseuGeologic in #Lisbon. Didn’t make a note of them all but no 8 is #Spatangus sp.
