Recently, we published a fascinating new article on the Green Moray Eel! The Green Moray Eel is a large species of Moray Eel found in the western Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest species of Moray Eel so far. It is considered to be a true eel, meaning that it is classified under the order Angulliformes. Though they are commonly found in shallow water reefs, they inhabit waters as deep as 130 feet. They are generally found alone, & do not live in packs, or groups.

This article dives into all the fascinating facets of the Green Moray Eel including its reproduction, discovery, intelligence, locomotion, diet, predators, & parasites.

A delicate, otherworldly marine creature floats against a completely black background, as if suspended in space. The animal is a transparent larval lobster, its body almost glass-clear so that many of its internal structures are faintly visible.

The lobster’s body is small and elongated, but it is surrounded by large, thin, circular plates or shields that look like translucent discs. These discs resemble tiny jellyfish bells and give the animal an alien, umbrella-like appearance. Extending from the body are many extremely long, spindly legs, each thin like threads of glass and dotted with tiny reflective points where the light catches.

At the front of the lobster, several jointed appendages are gripping a small, translucent shrimp. The shrimp hangs downward from the lobster’s grasp, its curved body limp as it is being eaten. The shrimp’s body is also see-through, with faint hints of pale blue and tiny orange spots near its head.

The lighting is bright and directional, highlighting the fragile, crystal-like anatomy of both animals while the surrounding water remains pitch black—typical of a blackwater dive where deep-sea creatures drift upward at night. The effect makes the lobster and its prey appear to glow softly in the darkness.

At the bottom of the image there is a small orange watermark that reads “© Gregory Rohlman 2023.”

Overall, the scene feels alien, delicate, and dramatic—a moment of predation captured among fragile, nearly invisible deep-ocean life.

Pacific Sea Nettles cruising out in the open ocean.

As they're commonly noted as the most popular jellies in Aquariums (aside from moon jellies) it goes without saying that these are genuinely beautiful but also deadly with their elongated tentacles that can sting you.

One of the most popular jellyfish exhibited in aquarium solely because of their golden brown colors and elongated tentacles.

A small sea slug called Goniobranchus geometricus crawls slowly across a sandy seafloor. The animal is about the size of a thumb and shaped like a soft oval with a wide skirt around its body. Its surface is deep violet-purple and covered with many rounded white bumps, giving it a texture similar to a tiny cluster of pearls or a soft pinecone.

The outer edge of the body forms a ruffled white rim that looks like a delicate border around the slug. Rising from the front are two tall sensory organs called rhinophores. They are pale at the base but fade to bright green at the tips, resembling small green antennae. Just behind them is a feathery cluster of gills, also tinted green, standing upright like a tiny underwater plant.

The nudibranch sits on coarse brown sand scattered with bits of rock and algae. The background fades into soft blue and gray tones, suggesting deeper water and making the slug’s vivid colors stand out sharply against the muted seafloor.

Interesting facts:
Toxic warning colors: The bright purple, white, and green coloration warns predators that the slug is chemically defended.
Stolen defenses: It feeds mainly on sea squirts (tunicates) and can store their defensive chemicals in its own tissues.
Shell-less mollusk: Although related to snails, nudibranchs lose their shells as adults.
Sensitive “antennae”: The green rhinophores detect chemicals in the water, helping the animal find food and mates.
Simultaneous hermaphrodite: Each individual has both male and female reproductive organs, allowing two slugs to fertilize each other when they mate.

Despite its striking appearance, this species usually moves slowly and quietly across tropical Indo-Pacific reefs, where it blends surprisingly well among sponges and tunicates it feeds on.

A matriach Humpback Whale is traveling along with various members of it's own kind, including two females and two males.

Humpback whales are genuinely one of nature's miracles of the ocean, as they're easily recognizable by their hump on their backs, their long pectoral flippers that are covered in barnacles, and their ability to both sing songs during mating season and their long distance migrations.

Before that, they were almost hunted to the brink of extinction but thanks to a public outcry that resulted in commercial whaling being banned since 1986, humpback whales are just as lively as ever as they're found worldwide in the oceans of our blue planet.

However, it's not without survival as humpbacks currently face ship strikes, noise pollution, and climate change that's causing them to starve as they need krill, herring, capelin, and sardines to survive across the open oceans.

Humpback Whales.

One of the most iconic baleen whale species, as they're famous for their ability to sing songs to females in courtship and their long distance migrations.

'By-catch' happens when fishing operations target one species but unintentionally capture many others. 🐢💔

The most direct way to reduce this harm is to stop supporting the industry driving it - by choosing not to buy fish or seafood. 🚫🎣
