A color illustrated postcard depicts a Pan American Airways Boeing 314 flying boat, known as the “Yankee Clipper,” during takeoff at LaGuardia Field. The large four-engine seaplane is shown skimming across the surface of the water, its hull creating a white spray and wake behind it. The aircraft has a boat-shaped fuselage designed for water operations and broad, high-mounted wings extending widely from either side. Each wing supports two radial engines with visible propellers in motion.

The fuselage is painted in a light metallic tone, with an American flag displayed prominently on the forward side. Passenger windows run in a row along the midsection of the hull. The tail features a vertical stabilizer with horizontal stabilizers mounted partway up the fin. In the background, low airport buildings and hangars line the shoreline, with additional small aircraft faintly visible on land. The sky transitions from warm tones near the horizon to pale blue above, suggesting late afternoon or early evening light. Printed along the bottom border of the postcard are the captions “PAA Yankee Clipper In Take Off” on the left and “LaGuardia Field” on the right.

The Blohm & Voss BV 238 was a German flying boat built during World War II. It was the heaviest aircraft ever built when it first flew in 1944, and was the largest aircraft produced by any of the Axis powers during World War II.

Although extensive defensive armament was planned the first prototype, the BV 238 V1, had none. Bearing the radio code of RO + EZ, it began flight trials in April 1944. It was strafed and partially sunk while moored on Lake Schaal, to the east of Hamburg.

One other prototype was effectively completed but never flown and two more were under construction at the end of the war.

The Hall PH flying boat was a development of the Naval Aircraft Factory PN-11. The initial XPH-1 first flew in December 1929. The US Navy ordered nine PH-1s which equipped VP-8 from 1932.

The PH-1 was replaced by the Consolidated PBY-1 Catalina in 1937.

In 1936 the US Coast Guard ordered seven PH-2s. These were similar to the PH-1 but with more powerful 750 hp Wright R-1820F-51 engines. Armament was omitted on the PH-2. In 1939, an additional seven PH-3s were ordered. These added an enclosed cockpit for the pilot and re-instated the armament.

The Hall flying boats were used by the Coast Guard for search and rescue duties and were fitted with specialized equipment for this role. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States entry into World War II, the remaining PHs were painted in U.S Navy Grey Green colors to replace the previous bare metal finish, armed, and used for anti-submarine patrols (particularly during the Operation Drumbeat U-boat attacks off the East coast of the United States in 1942) as well as continuing search and rescue operations. The Coast Guard continued operating the PH-2 and -3 until 1944.

The Kawanishi H8K was designed as a replacement for the Kawanishi H6K, which entered service in 1938. The Imperial Japanese Navy ordered the development of a larger, longer-ranged patrol aircraft under the designation Navy Experimental 13-Shi Large-size Flying Boat.

The H8K was powered by four Mitsubishi MK4Q Kasei 22 Engines giving it a maximum speed of 467 km/h (290 mph) at 5,000 m (16,000 ft). Its range was 7,152 km (4,444 miles)

The aircraft’s defensive armament was formidable, consisting of five 20mm cannons and five 7.7mm machineguns, along with the capability to carry two torpedoes or 2,000 kg of bombs or depth charges. It had a crew of ten.

Total Production was 167. The Allied reporting name for the Kawanishi H8K was Emily

The H8K entered production in 1941 and first saw operational use on the night of 4 March 1942 in a second raid on Pearl Harbor. This mission, known as Operation K, involved two H8Ks bombing Oahu, Hawaii, but due to bad weather, the mission achieved limited success. As Oahu was outside the range of the H8Ks, they were refuelled by a submarine at French Frigate Shoals, 900km west of Hawaii.

Martin JRM-1 Mars BuNo 76822 named Marshall Mars was delivered to the USN in February 1946. After delivery, it was converted and re-designated JRM-3. Assigned to squadron VR-2 and based at Naval Air Station Alameda in California, the Marshall Mars set a new world record for payload lifted on her second flight, carrying 27,427 pounds from California to Hawaii.

It was destroyed by an engine fire and sank on 5 April 1950 off Diamond Head, Oahu, Hawaii.

The Martin P6M Seamaster was a strategic bomber flying boat intended as the US Navy’s nuclear delivery system. Two XP6M-1 prototypes were built, with the first flying on 14 July 1955. Both were involved in accidents, resulting in a total of 9 deaths.

Six YP6M-1 pre-production aircraft were ordered, with the fist flying in January 1958. These differed from the XP6M-1 by having the engines angles away from the fuselage, as it was discovered that the straight alignment of the prototypes resulted in a scorched fuselage skin.

Testing of the YP6M-1 discovered that the Allison J71-A-4 turbojet was unreliable. Additionally, under heavy load, water spray was ingested into the engines, which resulted in a limiting of the sea conditions under which the aircraft could operate. Accordingly the program was cut as it was not considered possible to rectify these issues.

Eight modified aircraft designated P6M-2 were ordered, incorporating a series of changes to rectify the issues identified with the YP6M-1. These included using Pratt & Whitney J75 engines, an aerial refueling probe, improved avionics, and a canopy with better visibility. However by the time the first three had flown, the navy had decided that the ballistic missile submarine was a significantly superior delivery system. As a result only three of the eight P6M-2s ordered were delivered, the the remaining five scrapped before being delivered despite being completed.

The Saunders Roe A.27 London was a British military biplane flying boat built by the Saunders Roe company. Only 31 were built, entering service with the Royal Air Force in 1936. Although due for replacement by the outbreak of World War II, they saw some active service pending the introduction of the ultimately unsuccessful Lerwick.

The London Mk.II model equipped 201 Squadron RAF at RAF Calshot beginning in 1936, replacing Supermarine Southamptons. Others later were delivered in October 1936 to 204 Squadron RAF at RAF Mount Batten, Plymouth, also replacing Southamptons. More were delivered to the same squadron in 1937 to replace Blackburn Perths, and to 202 Squadron RAF at Kalafrana, Malta, replacing Supermarine Scapas, and 228 Squadron RAF at Pembroke Dock.

At the outbreak of World War II in September 1939, Londons equipped 201 Squadron RAF, which was by now stationed at Sullom Voe in Shetland, and 202 Squadron RAF at Gibraltar, as well as 240 Squadron RAF at Invergordon, which had re-equipped with Londons in July 1939. These aircraft carried out active patrols over the North Sea and the Mediterranean. Some were fitted with a dorsal fuel tank to increase operational radius. Armament in the form of bombs, depth charges, and naval mines up to a total weight of 2,000 lb (907 kg) could be carried beneath the lower wings.

Gradually, the Londons’ duties were assumed by newer aircraft such as the Lockheed Hudson, while squadrons flying Atlantic and Mediterranean patrols were re-equipped with Short Sunderlands. Some Londons were transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force. All were withdrawn from front-line duties by the middle of 1941.
