A Balinese singa is a mythical, winged lion creature serving as a protective guardian, symbol of strength, and ward against evil spirits in Balinese Hinduism. Often carved from wood or stone with a ferocious expression, bulging eyes, and fangs, these figures are commonly placed on roof corners, temples (puri), or homes, similar to gargoyles. The hindu carvers of Bali believed that the living wood could be imbued with the actual protective spirit by consecration in a ritual. Westerners may see a work of art, but the creator no doubt also saw a deeply spiritual object!
