This is a close-up photograph of a butterfly perched on a yellow wildflower.
	•	The butterfly is shown in sharp detail, with wings folded upright. Its wings are patterned in shades of gray, brown, and pale blue, with darker spots and wavy lines. The underwings have a somewhat mottled, camouflage-like appearance, helping it blend into tree bark or foliage.
	•	The butterfly has large compound eyes, long antennae with orange tips, and a visible proboscis (feeding tube) extended toward the flower.
	•	The flower it is feeding on has bright yellow petals radiating around a cluster of small, tightly packed golden buds at its center. Green stems and leaves surround the blossom.
	•	The background is softly blurred in green tones, making the butterfly and flower stand out sharply in focus.

This butterfly is a Hackberry Emperor (Asterocampa celtis), a North American species commonly found in wooded areas near hackberry trees, which serve as host plants for its caterpillars.

A hackberry emperor butterfly is shown perched on a crepe myrtle. Its wings are orange and black with white and black markings; the undersides of its wings are a variety of shades of brown, with black and white markings.

This hackberry emperor hung out for a few hours in my backyard today. Truly mesmerizing, the markings and colors.

Started work on a Hackberry Emperor. There’s a hackberry tree on the edge of our neighbor’s property that hosts hackberry and tawny emperor caterpillars and provides my garden a supply of both butterflies from spring until autumn. #butterflies #lepidoptera #hackberryemperor #art #natureillustration
