Herdwicks are known for being the hardiest of all British hill sheep breeds, well-suited to the harsh conditions of the high fells. Lambs are born black, and their fleece turns a distinctive grey with a white head as they mature. The breed has a natural "hefting" instinct, meaning they tend to stay on their specific area of the fell without extensive fencing. Beatrix Potter, the author and illustrator, was a keen Herdwick breeder and played a key role in preserving the breed.
