A woman stands calmly at the center of a dazzling, immersive room filled with bright yellow surfaces covered in evenly spaced black polka dots. She faces forward with a relaxed posture, her hands resting naturally at her sides. She wears a long black dress patterned with small white dots, black leggings, and dark shoes. Her dark hair is pulled back neatly, and her expression is gentle and composed.

The room itself appears to stretch infinitely in every direction due to mirrored walls and ceiling panels. Large glossy yellow spheres, each decorated with the same black polka dots, hang at different heights throughout the space. Some float overhead while others hover closer to the floor, creating a sense of depth and suspension.

The mirrors multiply both the spheres and the woman’s figure endlessly, forming a repeating tunnel of reflections that seem to extend far beyond the physical boundaries of the room. The floor is also bright yellow and dotted with black circles, some of which appear solid while others are reflections of the suspended spheres above.

Light bounces off the mirrored surfaces and glossy spheres, intensifying the saturated yellow color and giving the room a luminous glow. The repetition of dots across every surface creates a hypnotic visual rhythm, where the viewer’s sense of scale becomes uncertain as objects and reflections merge together.

The overall atmosphere feels playful yet surreal, as though the person is standing inside a living pattern that continues forever in every direction.

Film grain, reflections, a pulse that feels strangely familiar.
Sometimes losing yourself is the only way to see anything clearly.

I took this photo in 2019 while visiting Newfields in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the time there was a temporary installation of one of Yoyoi Kusama's Infinity rooms. All the Eternal Love that I Have for the Pumpkins was originally made in 2017 and features a mirrored room filled with pumpkins lit up like lamps. The mirrors create an illusion that the pumpkin field goes on for Infinity, and the viewer gets the sand in the middle of it. Much of Kusama's work focuses on her personal struggle with mental illness and art is a tool for her to manage the symptoms that she experiences.

This photograph shows a person who's come through a door into a room filled with pumpkins, and they are holding their phone to take the photograph presented here. The floor ceiling and walls are covered with mirrors, so the pumpkins are reflected into Infinity and fill the composition. The pumpkins are emitting light and are a golden color with black polka dots. Their shape is slightly curved making the pumpkins just a little bit surreal.

A photograph taken inside the Infinity Room at the ‘Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now’ exhibition at the Serralves Art Museum last year (2024). It was an amazing experience and this room was breathtaking.

Infinity Room

bright spots and dots on black
balls up against mirror walls
repeating over and over and over
forever and ever until perspective
becomes immaterial and corners
are not corners just junctions of
points of reflection that never meet
and are we standing on the ceiling?
are we simply images? breathless
the exit opens we stagger out and
like children we shout again! again!
