Macro shot of a golden yarrow plant that is beginning to bloom. The rest of the plant is a dusty sage color and has thin, almost needle-like leaves. The buds are round, and as they open up, short yellow fingers begin growing upward, while the rest are still tucked inside the pod.

A golden yarrow that is closer to being fully open. The fingers that were seen in the previous image are now petals, but the tips of the "fingers" are still retracted in the center of the flower. Some yellow flowers are blooming on the edge of a stream. The plant is called Swamp Candles. This is a native perennial plant with spikes of yellow flowers that appear in July and August. It is found in wetland habitats, such as marshes and bogs. I photographed these plants on a boardwalk through a wetland at the Paul Smiths VIC, a nature preserve in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York.
