Friedlander's selfies evolved into a rolling commentary on the environment and his own aging, as the scenery and his own visage have changed over the decades. Friedlander typically creates series of photographs, focusing on the mundane (television screens) to the complicated (the American social landscape). His selfies sometimes feature his face, such as in “Haverstraw, New York” where he is framed by the car window, or he can be found in shadows or blurred reflections in the background. A favorite theme through the years has been landscape shots taken from his car window as he travelled around the country. His dynamic compositions capture an American sensibility as he records the passage of time.
