More context on #Marrella splendens: famous #USGS geologist HD Walcott first (erroneously) described these as trilobites in 1912—what he called “Lace crabs”, although Charles Schuchert disagreed. Only in 1971 did HB Whittington show that they belong to a separate #arthropod subphylum altogether!

Simonetta provided the best older Marrella analysis. Look at the detail. This is in his 1962 analysis of the Walcott batch. He’s not happy that Walcott exaggerated 🤣 he’s not Achilles Guenee level rude yet
