Hike today! Beautiful #moss at Blackstone Gorge on the Rhode Island and Massachusetts border. I don't know the names of many plants here yet (I was raised in the Sonoran desert!) But we have mountain laurels and I think turkey tail mushrooms. There were oaks and pine trees galore. Just beautiful!

Two small woodland mushrooms grow from the top of a rough tree stump covered in bright green moss. The stump rises vertically through the centre of the image, its cracked brown bark partly hidden beneath a soft layer of feathery bryophyte moss. One mushroom sits at the very top like a small parasol, its pale tan cap spreading outward while the underside reveals fine radiating gills glowing warm orange in the sunlight. A second, slightly smaller mushroom grows just beneath it from the side of the stump. Around them the moss forms dense cushions and delicate branching shoots that spill down the wood like a miniature forest. Acid green big soft moss tufts and grey reindeer lichen (Cladonia) mounds protrude from a darker green moss and lichen patchwork coating the cliff face, with a few liverworts, invasive grasses, and quite a few red leaved Herb Roberts (the invasive european geranium) barging in. There is also a villainous himalayan blackberry shoot in the middle right side that stabbed me with its prickle as I sidled up the scree at the base of the cliff to take this photo.
Moss tussocks with reindeer lichen on a cliff. In the summer the south facing bluff is xeric and bakes in the sun and wind, but right now the stone seeps with water from the forest slope above, and swells with rain as the atmospheric rivers roll through.
