A small bee weaves in and around several tall, flowering stems of thyme. A wasp and a hover fly were also in this particular patch of blooms

Did u know? We gave up mowing 5 years ago & it has increased the life in our outside space, 10 fold. At the end of the season, we scythe, sickle & shear our no-mow lawns. After removing some clay soil and adding amendments, I laid out river rock and concrete slabs before planting woolly thyme as a border
After planting the woolly thyme, I added some common thyme until the woolly thyme fills in more. The white clover seed I spread is starting to pop up here
Between birds and pop up storms, my seeds kept getting displaced. The challenge has been in keeping the space clear of weeds while I add in more seeds where needed. I also had to put a temporary fence up as dogs and even people kept stepping in the exposed soil
This photo was taken this morning. It's only been about 3 weeks since I started adding everything back into the soil, so the progress has been reassuring because I've never been good at trusting the process
Our front lawn is the size of a stamp because the garden is so big. The awful clay soil grows better weeds than grass so I ripped it all out and added thyme and clover instead. Not quite #noMow but I'll only need my reel mower to trim it
It's still patchy but I like the progression

Year three of our permanent residence here in Westray and the third year of #NoMow summer and the #garden looking and sounding fab. Insects galore enjoying the flowers for nectar and the grasses provide food plants for caterpillars and micro shelter in the constant Westray winds. #wildlife
