A black bee is clinging to the edge of a strawberry leaf as she climbs along its perimeter. She has chewed her way down the leaf to her present position, as evidenced by the trail of raggedy leaf edge she’s leaving in her wake.
Last night @loriweidenhammer.ca taught me that little Osmia chew into the edges of strawberry leaves to make pulp for nest building, and today I watched one do it in my garden!
I highly recommend attending one of Lori’s talks if you’re interested in native bees.

I'm impressed with how carefully it crafted the chambers, they appear to either have different purposes or to be in different stages.
I hope they are mason bees, they're super pollinators. I've only seen one honey bee and two mason bees this year. 🙁

On the flat bottom of an orange flower, a black bee with a sparkly metallic undertone is cleaning its antenna by running it through a space on the foreleg specifically for this purpose.

There's a lot of male Red Mason Bees about waiting for the chance to mate. This guy is so neat and smart, I'm sure the females won't be able to resist.

Embracing Red Mason Bees. A hairy male bee is holding on the back of a larger female, whose abdomen has bands of red-ginger hairs even bigger than the male.
The Red Mason Bee, Osmia bicornis, females have only shown up on our garden in the last few days. This female has been claimed by the male on her back, who hung on despite being repeatedly assailed by other males for more than an hour.
