AION/PHANES, 100-150 CE. GALLERIE ESTENSI, MODENA Representations of Aion, god of circular time (from the hours of the day to the seasons) are almost always very weird. Sometimes Aion has a lion head as well as wings, sometimes he's breathing fire onto an altar. But he always has a snake coiled around him and is often shown within a circular or oval frame (here oval) with the symbols of the Zodiac on it. He is essentially a Mithraic god. But here he plays a double role, also as Phanes, a figure in Orphic mystery rites, so he's already a very syncretic figure. This panel comes from an unknown Mithraeum and was paid for by the priest ("pater") Felix, who had achieved the seventh and top level in the Mithraic hierarchy and whose name is inscribed at bottom. Aion/Phanes seems to be emerging from two halves of an egg, one atop his head and the other under his goatlike hooves. This is the Cosmic Egg, the breaking of which indicated the beginning of the universe. In the corners of the marble panel are the faces of the four winds. Did this particular Mithraeum also host Orphic ceremonies? This is a vexing image, crammed with meaning which is still largely obscure.
