Symphony of the Waking Man We begin with a brutal ascension: fortissimo bells blaring, sforzando, overstated. Too persistent to ignore. He awakens, pianissimo, gaining weight, not speed. Rhythm broken, stumbling into consciousness, shuffling to ablutions. The pulse rises, splashes of cold water shock to a crescendo. Shower raining in filigree, droplets dancing over the skin. Then, tempo established, motives aligned, hot coffee, building confidence, the stage is set. All instruments ready for the day’s performance.

The power had gone out. He wasn’t #spooked by the darkness. A blackout was pretty much expected with how bad this storm was. But everyone else in the office went on as if nothing happened. They typed to dead screens, talked on silent phones. He now very much wished he was out in the storm.
