A dark morph female Eastern tiger swallowtail on wild bergamot. There are several flowers in the picture. The butterfly is on the one in the center, which can barely be seen because of the size of the butterfly. It is facing up. The butterfly is almost all black, except for some beautiful iridescent markings near the bottom of its wings. There are small tails coming off the ends of the wings.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtails at Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve Near the end of July I was on the hunt for butterflies. Specifically Monarch butterflies. I’d tried a few of the places closer to home like Duke Farms and Mercer Meadows but I had no luck. I decided to try Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve. I’ve found butterflies there in past years. Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve isn’t at the top of my list simply because it’s a 45-minute drive out to New Hope. I arrived at the main meadow early, before Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve opened the main gate. I parked near the meadow just outside the gates. But as I walked round the meadow—all of it—disappointment started to set in. Not a single butterfly in sight. Eventually the gates opened. I thought that maybe I could find dragonflies at the pond. Which I did. But this post is about butterflies. A man and woman emerged from the woods just behind the pond. A brief conversation later and I learnt that there was a trail that led back to a spot where they’d seen many butterflies. A few minutes later and I found many Male Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterflies enjoying Wild Bergamot flowers. I’d been after Monarchs, those orange-and-black migrants that everyone recognises. Instead I found Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, which are arguably more striking but somehow less celebrated. The yellow wings with their black tiger stripes and the bright blue and orange spots near the tail are unmistakable once you see them up close. The Wild Bergamot was doing its job perfectly. These pale lavender flowers with their spiky, tubular petals are native to North America and absolutely magnetic to pollinators. The Swallowtails were working the blooms methodically, moving from flower to flower with that unhurried grace that butterflies have. It’s easy to forget that what looks like leisurely floating is actually hard work—they’re refuelling, gathering nectar to power those large wings. I’d walked the entire meadow, checked the usual spots, felt that familiar photographer’s frustration when the subject simply isn’t there. Then a chance conversation with strangers who’d just come from the woods changed everything. They didn’t know I was looking for butterflies. They were just sharing what they’d seen. But that small exchange sent me down a trail I might not have explored otherwise. The lighting in that back section was softer, filtered through tree canopy. The background fell into that creamy green blur that wildlife photographers dream about. The butterflies were plentiful and, crucially, they were feeding rather than flying. When butterflies are nectaring they stay relatively still, wings open to catch the sun, proboscis extended into the flower. It’s the moment when you can actually capture them in detail rather than as a yellow streak across the frame. Male Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are slightly smaller than females and lack the blue scaling on the hindwings that females sometimes have. These were definitely males, bright yellow and bold. They seemed unbothered by my presence as long as I moved slowly and kept a respectful distance. The Fujifilm X-T3 with a telephoto lens gave me enough reach to stay back whilst still filling the frame. By the time I left, I’d completely forgotten about looking for Monarchs. I’d found something better—not because Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are objectively superior butterflies, but because they were _there_ , abundant and active, on flowers that were perfectly suited to them. It reminded me that flexibility matters as much as planning. You can research locations, check bloom times, arrive early and do everything right. But sometimes the best moments come from abandoning the plan and following a trail you hadn’t considered, simply because someone else mentioned it in passing. ### Like this: Like Loading...
