Rockefeller, New York, 1961; on loan to the MPA, New York, 1961-78 During the nineteenth century the lion surpassed the leopard as the dominant symbol of Akan royalty. It came to adorn an array of court finery, including sandals, swords, and prestige seats. Introduced through early trade with Europe, the heraldic pose used for this pair of ornaments is characterized by firmly planted paws and a head turned in heightened alertness. Teeth-baring lions like these may reference a proverb that warns: "If the lion has no intention to attack, it will not show its teeth." additional info from website: “As each casting made using this process is unique, there are subtle differences in the bodies, facial features, and openwork areas on each golden animal. These differences are particularly evident in the muzzle: in one example, the tongue is wide and fleshy, and the flattened cheeks curve upwards to form a triangular snub nose with pointy nostrils; in the second example, the tongue is as a narrow rectangular projection, while the rounded triangular nose is framed by the padded lower cheeks. Additionally, one lion faces to the right, while the other faces to the left, suggesting that they were meant to flank another object.”

Both crocodiles’ bodies are decorated with a grid of delicate raised lines, which allude to the animal’s scales. The eyes are rosette-shaped, with dots surrounding the pupil. The two loops on either side of the two crocodiles would have been used to hang this pendant around the neck. Exquisite pendants such as this one might be part of a matrilineal family’s sacred inheritance, which is a group of precious objects often kept together in a separate room as a shrine to the family’s ancestors. Such gold adornments are only worn or displayed by family members on special occasions, such as funerals or visits to other villages. Among Akan peoples, figural forms featured on such ornaments often refer to proverbs and bear symbolic meaning: this particular pendant represents the popular Siamese twin-crocodile motif known as futumfunafu. With their shared stomachs but distinct heads, they allude to the challenges of aligning community and personal interests.”

Bald eagles have brown body feathers, white head and tail feathers, clear light yellow-green eyes with large pupils, yellow-orange beaks that curve downward to a point, yellow-orange legs, and yellow-orange feet that end in sharp black talons. Juvenile eagles take 4-5 years to acquire their adult feathers. During that transition time the eagle's feathers begin brown and then become mottled brown and white prior to the adult stage with a white head and tail as well as a brown body. In addition to the mottled feathers this juvenile still has a mostly black beak indicating that it may be 1-2 yrs old.

a storefront fried chicken takeout place, the sign above the window is made of two signs that are split in half. Both say The Original American Chicken. One in block black and white with a line image of chicken in a white circle logo, the other sign is more colorful with a red shadow on the KEN (the only part of Chicken that is visible of that version of the sign) and a chicken logo that is a realistic illustration of a chicken on top of a waving American flag.
