As if it's not hard enough already to walk on Buford Highway, this construction sign in Chamblee is blocking the whole sidewalk and partially blocking the MARTA bus stop. Luckily somebody walking by shoved it to the side so there's a bit more space now. #walkability

Urban Planners Explore The Science Of Walkable Cities The urban environment's impact on mental health is increasingly the subject of scrutiny, with many urban planners urging cities adopt more pedestrian-centric design.

“If walking is so beneficial, why isn’t it a bigger part of daily life? Much of the answer lies in how communities are designed.” 🗺

Walkability (or lack of it) is not a lifestyle choice.
It is a zoning outcome.

Car dependent design removes daily movement and drives obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, and injury before care begins.

Urban zoning is health care.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: A Land-Use Audit for Walkability. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar. We often look at how to improve streets for walkability, but how can we also improve land-use policies and practices to bring the benefits of walkability to more people? Quite a lot actually! Join Cary...

Walkability is a policy choice, not an accident. This CDC webinar digs into land-use decisions that either block or enable healthy, walkable communities—and what local and state governments can change right now. Register and tune in.

It’s a bit of a paradox because it seems cars are needed for mobility, but #walkability is better for seniors

And this isn’t really about Manor Park. It’s the precedent it sets - that complete streets with sidewalks and #VisionZero 30km/hr traffic calming measures in residential neighbourhoods across Ottawa as part of integrated renewal is at risk if Manor Park gets a pass.

The Jan-Feb issue of the Manor Park Chronicle had great articles in support of sidewalks like this one by Julie Zhang, the mom of a toddler who gets around Manor Park by walking and using @octranspo.com

Saw a mailman walking & delivering mail in Lockeland Springs. In my neighborhood 1.5 miles away, mail is delivered by a USPS worker in a vehicle who drives and brakes every 100 feet.

Just an interesting observation on #Walkability, Zoning, etc.

A narrow dirt path bordered by greenery leads downhill between a brick wall and a white fence in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Cows graze on the lush grass beside the path, with a mix of urban buildings visible in the background under a cloudy sky.

Urban cows. What the small car-dependent minority don't see and don't know is that Antananarivo is a patchwork of walkable villages.

#Walkability, #green space and lively food and beverage offerings are now a tempting offering even in car-centric cities like #Riyadh, where business parks like Laysen Valley have attracted top companies HQ like PwC and BlackRock - this is still limited and elite but it shows the tide is changing:
