My Mother - A Beacon of Light
For many years of my life, I grappled with feelings of dysfunction and inadequacy because my life didn't match my dreams.
Dropping out of high school left me burdened with disappointment and regret, particularly since I had always aspired to become an educator.
For a long time, I felt trapped in a cycle of dysfunction. Working as a cashier, I was stuck in a position that didn't showcase my true potential and passion. I constantly questioned my worth and abilities within society, especially as I imagined a different life for myself.
Until I recognized that my situation didn't define my entire story, I shifted my focus from what I hadn't achieved to the skills my mother had equipped me with. I once heard the saying, "Life does not come with a manual. It comes with a mother." Amid my dysfunctional circumstances, I began to validate and affirm all the lessons she imparted. My mother, a Guatemalan immigrant with a 3rd-grade education, never read me a book or attended parent-teacher conferences, and she rarely participated in after-school events. My teachers assumed she didn't care about my education.
However, my mother was always engaged in my learning and identity development. Our family's approach to literacy was out of the ordinary from the U.S. norm. It revolved around storytelling, oral lessons, household skills, grocery shopping, and even managing our family business at the market. I began to realize that my mother's energy and efforts were deeply connected to her hopes and dreams for my future. As a child, I often wondered what silent battles she faced while raising five children alone, but I sensed the unspoken dreams she held for me, which fueled her relentless work to provide.
This realization inspired me to pursue a career in the school system, allowing me to utilize the valuable skills I inherited from my mother while seeking avenues to reconnect with my dreams of becoming an educator. Surrounded by dedicated educators and enthu…
