The pied avocet is the symbol of the RSPB and is a wading bird. It is the symbol of the RSPB because it became extinct in the UK and recolonised Suffolk in the 1940s in Suffolk, where their location was officially kept secret at the time. It was made the RSPB logo in 1970. They have made a remarkable comeback in terms of numbers but are still Amber listed in the UK. On the IUCN Red List it is of Least Concern globally due to an extremely large range. It has an unknown population trend in general. It naturally lives in Europe, Asia and Africa. Some (but not all) of the population are migratory. In the UK it breeds mainly along the coast and its diet consists of invertebrates.

Photo of two Avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta). The Avocet is a wading bird with long legs, a long bill, and a slightly elongated neck. The bird’s plumage is mostly white, but the top part of the head, and the back of the neck, is black; there are also black markings around the borders of the wings and the tail. The beak too is black, and not only is it elongated, it turns upwards towards the end. The long legs, partly under water in this image, are a pale blue colour. Both birds are facing towards the left of the image so that we see their left sides, broken reflections of which can be seen in the blue water.
I promised more #Avocets, so here is a pair I photographed today at RSPB Middleton Lakes in #Staffordshire (where I also had good views of Redshank, plus Reed and Sedge Warblers—photos to follow—and saw Cuckoos, and a Bittern in flight).
