a SCULPTURAL vintage 1950s handmade mixed metals (copper, bronze, silver) geometric tribal modernist Mask design brooch by California sculptor/metalsmith Peter Macchiarini of San Francisco. Entirely handmade one of a kind piece of wearable modernist art with a heavy influence of African tribal art in the design! Created using copper, bronze, and sterling silver, and with a white stone inlay. Macchiarini is known for his pods, his sleek geometric designs, and his masks. The mask designs were hugely influenced by his exposure to African and Oceanic tribal art that also influenced just about every great modernist artist of the 20th century!
Measures 3-7/8" tall by almost 1-3/8" wide, and weighs a hefty 27.7 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Macchiarini". Probably one of if not my absolute favorite of his mask designs that I have seen! One of a kind wearable modernist art that you will never see again! Excellent vintage condition.

Here's a short biography of the artist that I compiled from online sources:

Peter Macchiarini (1909-2001) first made jewelry in 1936 and opened his own business in San Francisco, in 1948, devoting full time to making original contemporary jewelry. His work reflects themes that are reminiscent of Picasso’s cubism and African tribal art. In the stimulating environment of San Francisco‘s North Beach, a hub for the avant-garde, Macchiarini established himself as a pioneering jeweler and sculptor. His Grant Avenue studio, not just a commercial gallery but also a creative space, attracted a culturally robust clientele. This area in California became a crucible for the artist’s development, allowing him to explore various materials and techniques, thereby shaping the trajectory of modernist jewelry in the United States.
Macchiarini left an indelible mark on the world of avant-garde jewelry with his bold and innovative designs. Throughout the mid-20th century, Macchiarini’s work broke away from traditional jewelry-making methods, embracing abstract forms and experimental materials. His unique approach contributed significantly to modernist jewelry design, influencing the aesthetics of personal adornment during a period that celebrated artistic expression and individuality.

A rare one of a kind vintage 1970s handmade copper enamel modernist Angel design artwork by California artist/enamelist Betty Seaver of San Diego. A wonderful unique signed artwork by this rarely seen artist/enamelist! Enameled in multiple bright and cheery colors on a cut-out plaque that is attached to a rectangular wood backing. The design is of an angel or winged goddess holding a star sign in one hand, and with another star sign off to the left. Very brightly colored and immaculately crafted by this master of the art! Here's a short biography of the artist that I compiled from online sources:

Betty Seaver (1919-2002) was born and raised in San Diego. She got her degree in art from San Diego State, and afterwards taught art in the public school system for several years. In the 1970s, she took up enameling. She was a member of the Allied Craftsmen, and the Enamel Guild, and sometimes volunteered at the Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park. She sold her artworks mainly in local galleries, and her enamel art pieces are in several important private and public collections.

The outer edges of the wood backing measures 11" by 6" by about 3/4" at thickest points. Signed at back as shown in my photos, "Enamel on copper Betty Seaver San Diego, California". A rare no doubt one of a kind artwork by a hard to find California enamel artist! Excellent vintage condition.

A rare vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel in wood modernist Cat design box by California artist/enamelist Kay Whitcomb of San Diego. Entirely handmade one of a kind piece of vintage modernist enamel art by one of the preeminent mid century American enamelists! Here is a short biography of the artist from the Enamel Arts Foundation website:

A major figure in American enameling, Kay Whitcomb was born in 1921 in Arlington, Massachusetts, to a long line of New England metalsmiths. Her work explored diverse subjects, and she incorporated words, phrases, and proverbs into it. She became versed in numerous techniques and started exploring unconventional methods of fusing glass to metal. By the late 1960s she was experimenting enameling on steel at factories in Germany and Belgium. Among her many large-scale works produced at Crahait Emailleries in Gosselies, Belgium, was a pair of eighty-four-by-thirty-two-inch doors, which were shown at California Design 11 at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1971. Her desire to share her knowledge led her to teach enameling at the La Jolla Art Museum and the San Diego Museum of Art shortly after her move to the region. She juried and curated numerous exhibitions and went to great efforts to keep enameling on public display. Besides exhibiting in Europe, she led the effort to have several American enamelists included in the prestigious International Biennial of Enamel Art in Limoges.

Measures 10" long by 6.5" wide by 2.5" high at rim. Marked at front in lower right corner, "Kay Whitcomb '61", also has hand etched signature and date on back into the wood as shown. No doubt a one of a kind piece of enamel art, though I have seen a very similar design in a wall-hanging version in the collection of the Enamel Arts Foundation. There is some wear and discoloration to the wood sections of the box, and the white plexiglass liner inside as shown. Excellent vintage condition.

a SPECTACULAR vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist Galactic Cluster or Microbiology design platter/artwork by California artist/enamelist Annemarie Davidson (1920-2012) of Sierra Madre, California. Super vivid coloring and super eye-catching modernist design resembling stained glass globules on a field of black. Is it a galactic cluster? Or a slide of microscopic creatures swimming in a Petri dish? Or an amazing Pointillism stained glass creation? I can't say for sure, but it's amazing! The only example of this design that I have seen! I am guessing that this is one of her earliest works from the late 1950s because the gauge of copper used is much heavier than any I have held before, and the artist mark at back is hand drawn in the enamel not done with a stencil like you see in later pieces. (See the short biography below for other indications of the work being an earlier one.) Extraordinary size at 11" diameter makes this a real collector coup!
Measures 11" diameter by about 3/4" high at rim. Still retains original artist sticker at back, along with her signature, a conjoined AD. The front side is near flawless with just a couple very very light surface abrasions that aren't at all noticeable when displayed. Also, at back there are three indentations along the rim from being hung on the wall, and some light crazing to the enamel in a couple spots. No loss to the enamel at all. Excellent vintage condition with the above caveats but no damage or detractors whatsoever as shown

Born in Berlin in 1920, Annemarie Behrendt moved with her family to New York in 1936.
In 1957, while her husband was on sabbatical at Harvard University, Davidson studied briefly with the prominent enamelist Doris Hall at a community center in Cambridge. While Hall worked in a broad range of styles, from nonrepresentational to figurative, it was her brilliantly colored abstract work that most deeply influenced Davidson. Davidson’s earlier work, done between 1957 and 1959, reflects that influence in its sparkling color and vivid decoration.
Her work was selected for the prestigious Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition at the Wichita Art Association in 1958, and it was featured in several of the pioneering California Design exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum in the early 1960s. In 1961 three of her works were reproduced in the catalogue for California Design 6. Throughout her long and richly productive career, Davidson has created forms intended for everyday use, which she decorates with spare abstract patterns or the free-form organic shapes that she calls “jewels.” For many of her abstract compositions, she uses a sgraffito technique, incising straight lines into the enamel, which fan out from a central focal point and present a linear counterpoint to the more fluid sculptural forms of her “jewels.” Davidson has collaborated with fellow artist Blaine Rath since 1959. Rath creates beautifully crafted boxes in a wide variety of woods, in which Davidson mounts her elegantly proportioned enamels. Her approach is in keeping with the designer-craftsman aesthetic, as she explained in an interview published in the Cross-Country Craftsman in 1962: “My philosophy of work is simple: I try to create something colorful and decorative in order to make small objects, necessary in the home, beautiful.”

A super rare early Annemarie Davidson copper enamel artwork circa 1950s - is it a galactic cluster, or a view thru a microscope, or a pointillist stained glass design?

A striking vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel on wood Op Art Moiré abstract modernist design box by California artist/enamelist Annemarie Davidson of Sierra Madre, California. Super vivid coloring and super eye-catching Op Art moiré pattern inspired design! Born in Berlin in 1920, Davidson came to the US in the mid 1930s, and took up her residence in California in the mid 1940s where she spent the rest of her life creating striking and unique enamel works of art! (For a great biography of the artist take a look at "The Enamels of Annemarie Davidson" by Bernard N. Jazzar and Harold B. Nelson on the Ganoksin metal arts website.) Measures 5" by 5" at top by 2.25" high at edges. Still bears the original artist sticker at the bottom as shown in the photos. The wood section of the box was made by Blaine Rath who collaborated with Davidson often on boxes, bookends, and other projects. There is some very slight separation in one corner of the bottom wood section which is not at all noticeable when displayed but is shown in my third photo closeup of the side, and is no doubt just natural warping of the wood over time from the drying process. Excellent vintage condition with the above caveat and as shown.

An androgynous one of a kind vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel modernist Face in Profile "Surrealia" design artwork by Janet Hoover of San Diego, California. Janet Hoover was a member of the San Diego Enamel Guild that included such greats as Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley, Kay Whitcomb, Barney Reid, Phyllis Wallen, Joann Tanzer, James Parker, Margaret Price and sculptor/jeweler Jack Boyd. The design of this artwork is a stylized androgynous 'face' from the period that could be a man, could be a woman, actually reminds me of David Bowie a little. Created in greens, browns, beige, and white enamel on a slightly concave copper bowl/plate at center of a quality natural wood frame. Measures 8.25" by 8.25" by 1.5" deep. Weighs about 2 pounds prior to packing. Has original labeling for the artist attached at back as shown, including the title, "Surrealia". Excellent vintage condition.

A huge one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver copper enamel modernist pendant on cord necklace by San Diego artist/craftsman Barney Reid (1913-1992). A very large quite rare and outstanding example of the modernist enamel art created by this important California artist from the mid 20th century! Truly wearable art! A founding member of San Diego’s Allied Craftsmen, Reid was a talented artisan and prolific in many media including metal, clay, wood, and marble, as well as oil painting and furniture design. A selection was featured in several shows in the 1950s and 60s at New York City’s Museum of Contemporary Crafts, including Enamels in 1959. Reid's work was prominently displayed in the exhibition "San Diego Craft Revolution" at the Mingei Museum in San Diego in 2012. Here is a short biography of the artist that I compiled from online sources:

Barney Reid grew up in Yuma Valley, Arizona earning his BA at Arizona State College. He moved to San Diego to work as a graphic designer after teaching at Arizona State University (between 1946-49) and launched ReidArt offering screen-printed fabrics and textiles. Barney Reid’s jewelry was exhibited nationally in the 1950s and '60s and for a time he shared a studio with Harry Bertoia. Reid’s enamels were featured in several prominent exhibitions throughout the country including the prestigious annual Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition at the Wichita Art Association in 1952, 1953 and 1954; Enamel: An Historic Survey to the Present Day, organized by the Cooper Union Museum for the Arts of Decoration in 1954; the seminal Enamels at New York’s Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1959; and the Scripps Annual in Claremont, California in 1964. One of Reid’s most inventive works – an abstraction in which small enamel panels were mounted on a horizontal wood panel in a lively, interlocking composition – was featured in a 1957 article in Craft Horizons – the forerunner to American Craft – in an article titled 'Plaque Bouillabaisse'. Reid’s works from the late ‘40s through the ‘60s are quite scarce. By the mid-1970s until his death he worked almost exclusively in intaglio printmaking.

A flawless vintage 1950s handmade blues and gold copper enamel abstract modernist tray artwork by California multi-disciplinary artist/designer Sascha Brastoff (1917-1993). An incredible one of a kind work of abstract art in shades of blue and white with gold painted overtop the enamel! An exceptionally large example, and in flawless original condition! His work is getting harder and harder to find especially in the larger formats like this one! Measures 11.75" diameter by 1.75" high at rim when placed flat, and weighs over 2 pounds prior to packing. Signed at front as shown, "Sascha B." and has a number at back that is likely the design number. Brastoff designed these enamel artworks, but had professional enamelists make them for him to his specifications. This was the case with the bulk of his pieces as his designs crossed into so many different arts and crafts. As these enamel artworks were handmade, they are each unique with small differences in the execution of the design. See my last two photos for an image of the artist as a young man, and a short biography of him that I found online. There is an original hanging apparatus at back as shown. This is an enamel artwork, not a catch-all on a table where you throw your keys and coins. Enamel is quite fragile, and I suggest preserving it by displaying it on your wall or in a case. Excellent vintage condition.

A superb and very rare one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver abstract modernist design cocktail ring by mid-century silversmith/enamelist James Parker of San Diego California. James Parker's jewelry was always hand-fabricated and one of a kind, and never cast, made in multiples, or mass-produced. An exceptional ring by this noted California modernist! This ring is part of a collection purchased directly from the estate of the artist. This one of a kind piece of 1950s wearable art by James Parker is entirely hand-fabricated in heavy gauge solid sterling silver forming a design of a raised undulating line over an oxidized background all within an egg-shaped frame that sits atop the ring band. James Parker was in London in 1939 where he purchased a ring from the Georg Jensen shop that inspired him to make jewelry himself when he returned to the US after the Second World War. He was a member of the Allied Craftsmen of San Diego and showed his distinctive jewelry designs in a number of national exhibitions, including California Design X at the Pasadena Art Museum, and Craftsmanship in a Changing World in 1956 at the inaugural exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in NY (now known as the Museum of Arts and Design).Parker's jewelry also appeared in American Craft magazine in the 1950s and 60s. More recently, several of his pieces were exhibited in the San Diego Craft Revolution show and book from the Mingei Museum in San Diego. The ring measures 7/8" by 3/4" at top, size 7 US, and weighs 13.7 grams total Marked inside the band as shown with the James Parker conjoined and stylized JP maker mark with "Hand Made", also "Sterling" to the side. Excellent vintage condition.

A one of a kind vintage 1960s SIGNED handmade copper enamel and bronze modernist cuff bracelet by Jack Boyd of San Diego. Boyd (1934-1982) was born and raised in Alpine, California ( a small town about 30 miles outside San Diego) and quickly showed an interest in art and creating his unique designs. At just 20 years of age, he joined the Allied Craftsmen of San Diego which included James Parker, the Woolleys, and Barney Reid (among others). His earliest work is always one of a kind and unique and decidedly mid century and constructivist in nature, while his later more brutalist jewelry items are cast bronze multiples and most likely re-issued multiple times as there was demand for them. This bracelet is a fine example of his much rarer early work, and is no doubt a unique and one of a kind creation. There is another similar shown in the catalog for the exhibit "San Diego Craft Revolution" (2011-2012) at the Mingei Museum in San Diego, and that one is shown on page 84 of the catalog. It is similar in construction, but the enamel section is completely different in design. This bracelet measures 2-1/4" wide at top, and fits my 7.5" wrist perfectly, but could be adjusted by a professional up or down a few sizes if needed. Due to the construction method of this bracelet, specifically how the enamel plaque is attached to the bronze cuff, I do not recommend that anyone attempt to size this bracelet themselves. Marked at back on the reverse of the enamel plaque with his early hand-engraved JB mark as shown in my photos. Excellent vintage condition.

a SCULPTURAL pair of vintage 1950s handmade sterling silver and pearl modernist Heart cufflinks by California artist/silversmith Harold Fithian. A sculptural and muscular dimensional design of an abstracted heart shape with a post-set 7mm cultured pearl off-center. Harold Fithian (1905-1972) was an all-American romantic figure - he was born and raised in Southern California - worked on the back lot of Universal Studios in Hollywood in the 1920s - was a labor organizer and friend of Woody Guthrie in the 1930s and 40s - a well-known designer and metalsmith in the 1950s and 60s - and he is particularly well-known for his modernist style cufflinks and other mens jewelry. His work is rare compared to most other studio modernist silversmiths, and his pieces are getting harder and harder to find! Each cufflink measures 3/4" by 1", and the pair weigh a hefty 14 grams total. Marked with his "Fi" maker mark, also marked "Sterling Plaque". ( "Sterling Plaque" means that the front part is solid sterling silver , and the swivel back section is silver-plated. Fithian used silver-plated brass for the swivelbacks because it was stronger and held up better in the long run.) Excellent vintage condition

A huge and quite rare vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel modernist pendant on cord necklace by San Diego artist/craftsman Barney Reid (1913-1992). A very large quite rare and outstanding example of the modernist enamel art created by this important California artist from the mid 20th century! Truly wearable art and a one of a kind! A founding member of San Diego’s Allied Craftsmen, Reid was a talented artisan and prolific in many media including metal, clay, wood, and marble, as well as oil painting and furniture design. It is his work in enamel and jewelry, however, for which he is best known. One of Reid's larger works, a multipanel enamel mobile, sold at Christie's in 2016 for over $32K before auction fees and taxes!
This pendant measures 3" in diameter, and hangs on the original 20" cord that can be retied at different lengths as desired, or even replaced for larger sizes. Marked at back as shown in the photos. Excellent vintage condition.

A skilled graphic designer, Reid worked as the art director at the Naval Electronics Lab, Point Loma, San Diego from 1951 to 1969. During this time he was commissioned by the Lab to create two murals for their cafeteria. He also created a mural for the Port of San Diego.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Reid’s enamels were featured in several prominent exhibitions throughout the country including the prestigious annual Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition at the Wichita Art Association in 1952, 1953 and 1954; Enamel: An Historic Survey to the Present Day, organized by the Cooper Union Museum for the Arts of Decoration in 1954; the seminal Enamels at New York’s Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1959; and the Scripps Annual in Claremont, California in 1964. One of Reid’s most inventive works – an abstraction in which small enamel panels were mounted on a horizontal wood panel in a lively, interlocking composition – was featured in a 1957 article in Craft Horizons – the forerunner to American Craft – in an article titled Plaque Bouillabaisse."

Reid's work was also prominently featured in the groundbreaking exhibition, "San Diego's Craft Revolution —From Post-War Modern to California Design" at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego from 2011-2012.

This painting is on artist board that has been laid down on a wood backing just slightly larger than the painting as shown, and has a small hanging loop at back top. Measures 16.75" tall by 5" wide. Not signed, and was from the artists personal collection and no doubt displayed during the holiday season by the artist and his family. As noted above, the certificate from the estate which is signed by the artist's daughter, Julia Reid Miller, will accompany this artwork to its new home. Excellent vintage condition.

a RARE pair of vintage 1950s handmade ebonized wood and brushed steel modernist salt and pepper shakers by Bay area artist and silversmith Milton Cavagnaro. Extremely rare and difficult to find (I've only seen 4 pairs in the last 10 years!), these are little modernist masterpieces by the famed California artisan! Although utilitarian and useful, they are also miniature sculptures suitable for display! He designed and made these in the early 1950s, and they were sold in galleries as sculpture for daily use. At the time, they were pictured in American Craft magazine in an article about the artist, and were included in a Good Design exhibit at the MOMA in NYC! They are very usable, but also would look amazing displayed with other mid century modernist objects sculpture and art! Each measures 2-3/4" high by 1-1/2" by 1-1/2", and each weighs about 53 grams total. Signed at bottoms as shown. The metal tops are hinged and swing up for re-filling, and once closed will not accidentally fall open as they are firmly closed. Excellent vintage condition

RARE set of three vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel on wood platforms abstract modernist conceptualist sculptural objects by Long Beach California professor artist sculptor and metalsmith Dieter Muller-Stach. Each of the three are copper enamel in irregular shapes that are attached with screws to wood bases. The wood bases were cut to match the copper enamel at top. One of the wood bases is flat at top, the other two are cut on an angle so the copper enamel is tilted to one side. The largest (red/black) is 7-3/4" by 4-3/4 and weighs 297 grams, the medium (greens) is 7-1/2" by 4-1/2" and weighs 241 grams, the smallest (green/orange) is 6-3/8" by 3-1/8" and weighs 248 grams. The artist was born in 1935 in Germany where he studied jewelry-making and metal-smithing at the Art Academy in Munich. He taught in Ghana for six years before coming to CSULB in Long Beach California to teach jewelry-making in the Art Department in 1968 where he joined Al Pine among others at the forefront of the studio jewelry movement in the LA area. His work was featured in California Design 11 in 1971, and in Oppi Untracht's encyclopedic book, "Jewelry Concepts and Technology", among other publications, and his art is in both private and museum collections. He retired in 2003, and passed away in 2011, and this set of three was purchased directly from his estate shortly after. Unmarked. There are some irregularities to the enamel which I believe are original not damage as shown in the photos. Excellent vintage condition
