A silvery fruticose Evernia lichen species on a branch: the lichen is relatively large, and very branching. It is mostly a silvery gray color, with some powdery green fronds. The lichen is growing on a mossy branch. Everything is very moist and green due to the current weather.

A broken chunk of a large madrone (Arbutus menziesii) has fallen to the ground after a windstorm. The branch wood shows the richness of the madrone wood colors: to the right is a dark, almost black area (possibly disease damage) and then you can see the grainy wood flowing to the left, with shades ranging from a deep orange red heart to a pale tan at layer at the edges. There are a couple of knots, with convolutions in the grain, like a swirl in a stream. The branch is resting on a bed of dead leaves.

Several large but unhealthy madrone trees fell this winter. The park rangers have been removing them from the trails, and cutting some down, but the litter usually gets left in place, providing shelter for critters and an insight into the decomposition process. It is untidy and sometimes jarring, but the parks department tries to follow nature as much as possible in the trail system.

A photo of Hayden Reservoir shows an early winter storm scene. The sky is full of lowering gray clouds with a few bits of blue. Tha lake is, surrounded by trees still showing yellow fall foliage. The grasses on the near shoreline are also gold, with patches of fresh snow slowly melting into the ground. In the background, behind the trees on the far shore, you can see a mountain range, mostly dark gray, with snow on its flanks. The reservoir itself is the color of a silver mirror, with wind ripples in the distance and a smooth area reflecting the sky and trees in shades of silver and gold.

Bright red barberry berries glisten in the rain, sprinkled across the photo on brown branches with sharp thorns. The branches are also festooned with dusty blue green lichen, both fluffy (fruticose) and growing growing close to the branch (foliose). Here and there a clump of moss makes for an additional color splash. You can see raindrops forming on the berries. The overall effect is of spots of red and green falling towards the ground.

A split madrone trunk viewed in the pouring rain shows its peeling glory. The right and left of the fork are covered with rough dark bark at the periphery of the photo, with green moss bits providing some color. But the center of the fork is bark less, and is a golden yellow brown with patches of glowing orange yellow. Looking through the fork you can a background of brown autumn leaves. Everything is covered with a gloss of water creating bright highlights

Hydrangea leaves continue their color displays until they fall. These lobed and rough textured oak leaf hydrangea leaves are changing from dark green to purple at the outer edges. You can see where there is a peek at red in a couple of spots. These leaves are at the top, but you can see brighter colored leaves below, in shades of red, orange and yellow.
