A landscape oriented image taken from a vaperetto in Venice. We were on our to visit the Lido when we spotted a dolphin swimming in Venice Basin, that wasn’t something we expected to see but one we were delighted to encounter. The bottom two thirds of the image are water, the dolphin is slightly to the right on the first third. Sadly I only got its middle, both head and tail are in the water. La Salute sits central on the horizon with a nice cloud filled sky behind.

A robin was minding its own business when a pigeon came in to land in the same tree (rather a sad tree, it had started to die so we cut it back, which seemed to prompt it into a second flush. So much so a couple of years on and it’s still with us). The robin didn’t notice the pigeon until the last minute and so was a little taken aback 😮

A portrait oriented image taken at dawn of gondolas on the waterfront in Venice. It’s an oft taken image but it has to be done. The bottom two thirds of the frame are the water and gondolas in it. The angle puts the boats on a diagonal so the from the bottom left corner the water fills the image in a triangle and then we have the gently bobbing gondolas with their shadows on the water. It’s a long exposure so the boats are slightly blurred with their doffing (the metal piece at the front of the boat) glinting. Jutting up between them are the mooring posts and running from mid top third away from us are a line of lanterns still lit as the sun is not yet up, but we do have a lovely orange/yellow sky above everything.

He’s mainly white but has a black patch on his flank and across the top of his head including his ears. The image on the left contains two small chalkboard signs that the cat is sitting near to and from them we learn that the cat is call Sir Oscar, he suits it very well. The sign also invites you in to see the shop where Sir Oscar will be waiting for you.

Across the water, through the stilts, we can see San Giorgio Maggiore. In the foreground and the subject of the image, are two fellow travelers unknown to me but I couldn’t resist photographing them. They are a boy and girl, the boy is closer to me standing on the pavings with his back to me, the girl is looking towards him as she stands on one of the jetties. Each have there mobiles in hand raised and photographing each other. They have extremely happy smiles obviously having a lot of fun. When they noticed me after the event they laughed, which was nice as I’m always a bit self conscious doing street photography.
