A landscape of sandstone fins in dull orange in the shade, and yellows where the sun strikes them at their tips. Below their tips there is snow clinging to their bases lower down. In the foreground there is a prominent sandstone saddle that rises at it's far end in an abrupt peak with sun still on it. To it's right are several clumpy green desert trees in the shade of the stones.
Above the landscape is a blue sky with wispy clouds lower toward the horizon, which is blocked by the sandstone spires.
This photo is very near sunset. The sun is out of frame to the far right, and only the tips of the tallest sandstone features have direct sun on them.
This was taken in the Devil's Garden area of Arches national Park, Utah, on a 'primitive trail' that visits many grand vistas and geological features, including arches.

For #Stunday I'm back at the archives for the 2023 Winter trip to the #Moab area of #Utah. I had a very memorable hike in Devil's Garden! The primitive trail option was awesome!

Just left of center is a colorless dodecahedron of paulingite-K surrounded by colorless clinoptilolite-Ca. The yellow cluster to the right is phillipsite-K coated with an amorphous iron silicate. These are found in boulders dredged from the Columbia River during construction of the Rock Island Dam. This is the type locality for paulingite-K. A search to find it the source of the boulders was not successful.

A little geology today. Found another couple of chunks of quartz mixed in with the native sandstone down in little creek. These are not at all rounded and so have not traveled far. #geology #rocks #quartz #streamsandcreeks #water #treesforclimate

New #Geology research by Myrow, Hu, and Lamb shows Late Paleozoic tropics were warm and stormy. Wave modeling of 300-Ma deposits reveals giant waves from Category-1 hurricanes, indicating seas above 26.5°C.

Wrote a little about this study in stone, with a few more frames from the archives included on the blog. A moment of contemplative calm for your Sunday reading pleasure.

Also has me thinking it may be time to pull out the film camera again.

Today I finished prepping this gorgeous Caenisites turneri!

Caenisites is a fairly rare ammonite from the blue lias. On my last trip I only found this one, on my first day no less!

Check the thread for a prepping timeline.

Photo taken March 14, 2026, near Beegum Gorge #ShastaCounty, #NorthernCalifornia of an interesting looking rock I saw when hiking. I checked it using Google Lens, and it said it was a fossilized sponge. I don’t think geologists have to worry about being replaced for now. #photography #geology #rocks

A tranquil Lakeland view at Derwent Water, Keswick, Cumbria, England on an overcast winters day across a grey lake to a mountain landscape.
In the foreground a wooden jetty leads the eye down the perfectly still lake to the mountains in the distance.
The wooden jetty and it's posts and the surrounding scenery are reflected in the calm, still waters of the grey lake.
The scenery in the background includes:
Derwent Island in the centre, the most prominent island on the lake. It is the only inhabited island on the lake and is owned by the National Trust. It is covered in trees with a boathouse and wooden jetty just visible.
The Jaws of Borrowdale in the distance - this is where Borrowdale valley carved by ice, and eroded through thousands of years, is constricted between the steep slopes of Kings How and Castle Crag.
The North Western Fells including Catbells and Causey Pike which has a dusting of snow on its summit.

A uniquely eroded stone with a ridged texture along its sides stands in focus among a pile of other rocks. In the background a river flows past in soft-focus. The highlights reflecting off of the water run in the same direction and echo the texture of the erosion marks on the stone.

The colours of the rocks are a range of dusty blue-greys and light purple, red tones. The effect of the overall image is a soft, gentle portrait of a stone and the water that eroded it.

Documenting the idea of time made visible has been an ongoing project, and I love the tonality & grain of these geologic details caught on film.

Mantle plume–driven uplift accelerated erosion and carbonate weathering, temporarily creating a powerful carbon sink that may have outpaced volcanic degassing from the CO₂-poor Emeishan basalts.

A new perspective on deep Earth–climate interactions!🤔

Could the Tyrannosaurus rex have evolved into giants far earlier than previously believed? A 74-million-year-old shin bone found in New Mexico may have belonged to a relative of the ferocious predators. “It's a dead ringer for T. rex,” Dr. Nicholas Longrich of the University of Bath said. Read […]
