10 years ago, #Ireland became the first country to legalise marriage equality by popular vote. I will never forget the emotional impact of the #HomeToVote movement; I bawled when I saw the photos & videos of emigrants returning to support the community. Proud to be Irish & an ally. 🌈 #HappyPride

I spent the day before scrolling through Twitter following the #HomeToVote hashtag and crying my eyes out. People traveled tens of thousands of miles at enormous expense, one woman cut short her exotic vacation she'd saved years for, for the honor and privilege of standing up for what is right.
#HomeToVote was a FB group where people could get money to help them fly, train, ferry to Ireland. We ran airplanes & ferries & had people coming from all over the planet. We paid the fares. Through each day another plane would land & then the next kicked in [2]
You know how I told you I was the central hub on Twitter for Irish referendums [same sex marriage; abortion & Care Ref]. We won each.

Rugby is something that - with two #HomeToVote referendums, and serving as a board member at Irish in Britain - defined my links to home, as an Irish citizen living in London. Settled back in Dublin, I've fitted out two small children in green jerseys. (One now asking why there's water in my eyes.)
And #HomeToVote. I still think everyone posting about it was a terrible idea. If the result had been as close as the divorce referendum, the No side definitely would have dragged those posts into court to challenge the result. But with a margin of almost half a million votes, they knew they couldnt

So many options, Malta and Ireland are the only EU countries who don’t allow it, so there’s 25 EU examples to look at straight away. #HomeToVote was great but isn’t sustainable, i think the current rule is you can vote at 18 months abroad? But people are not taken off the register &get polling cards
