Day 15: Worship/Ceremonies.

I hinted at religion/s in Far Removed. But we get to see Beyashisik (an annual religious festival) on page in OWU. Faith is more integral to some characters than others, so it was fun writing different perspectives on the same event.

#TheDragonblood: There's hunting in Nemoria. Probably mostly your standard game (although I'm always ready to amend this if inspiration strikes), but aurochs are still around and likely also get hunted.

I haven't decided how Gnaramater and Amfrobena feel about hunting. (1/4)

All my characters have totally different backgrounds, and Ix is certainly the most religious as a former nun of the Rhean Ultraphysicists order, but I like to add in old traditions like the Frigid Frumba, a Tuhntian traditional 4-faced snow-being built to scare away bad luck #marchworldbuilders

FUCK YES I'VE BEEN WORLDBUILDING MORE OF THIS RECENTLY!

Galvanism doesn't really have *worship* persay, but people do pray to The Beings of Pure Neon, whether it be a quick "hey, let this go well" or like a 5 minute essay of a prayer.

Aside from any humans who still practice current religions, we do see the Jantan Kor'agel (or "prefect, for us outsiders), pray in front of a shrine. Candles are lit in a particular order, and the longer he holds his pose and lets incense burn, the louder the prayer.

Biyeho has a number of rituals and ceremonies. There's probably one for anything people can think of, but the most prominent is the new year ceremony every spring. It's typically done for the masses by a high priest/ess and gives offerings for the gods to benefit the people.

Hello, #MarchWorldbuilders! This week is for the organized religious aspects of our worldbuilding. As always, keep it relevant to the religion as depicted in your fictional world. Irl religions only if that's what your story also depicts.

What are some prayers or ritual acts of worship performed?

14. Animals used in rituals

The creation of a Fae Reunion can only be done during the hour of twilight and requires the sacrifice of a Synapsica butterfly. It must be willing, so a faelord or druid must speak to it and convince it to give it's life to save another's memories.

If a ritual manhood hunt counts then - definitely yes, I have several hunter-gatherer peoples who have such or similar rituals: for some, it's just 'adulthood' regardless of gender.

The presentation of a Valor Knight to a gryphon hatchling might also be considered a ritual.

We've touched on this before, but seers will seek to earn the favor of the sun and moon birds by offering up sap from Sancti Trees. They'll fill a container with this 'Divine Dew' (the bigger the better) and place it directly under the sun and moon as they soar through the sky.

Im loosely defining Bellwraiths as animals for this

So, this doesn’t happen anymore, but when a new bellkeeper was being sworn in, they would have to trek around the area and find the spirit of the past bellkeeper , and gain their approval to become a bellkeeper —

There are barely any religious rituals left for reason we will get into later, and even those don't use animals.

As for arcane rituals, the ones using living breathing animals are usually on the grim/darker side and frowned up on in modern times.

The Golden Sun church, the main religious force in the Spiral Castle, venerates serpents. They use snakes in rituals and ask them to be prophets (and spies). Serpents also relate to dragons and thus carry mythic significance. One could argue reptiles have most innate mana

In the north jousting games are popular, as well as the Grand Magic Games which sometimes feature animals.

In the Empire gladiator games are waning in popularity but still practiced. Horse shows are big in Dahinar, and villages often have goat or dog shows.

It is common practice for jockeys to burn a few strands of their mount's hair in a stone bowl before a race. Horse breeders will also do this at the beginning of the breeding season. The reason for this has been lost to history. It was a way or invoking Hushu, the god of horses.

During the burial of the dead, the clergy take several dead creatures - centipede, worm, butterflies, cricket, bumblebee, beetle & hermit crab - and place them in clay jars attached to the dead person. It's believed these become vessels for the person's "soul organs," 🧵1/2

The Grand Caravan, the largest gathering of Wyldkin in the world and essentially a traveling city, goes between several ritual sites throughout the year.

Since Wyldkin are already so closely tied to animals and nature, the ritual at these site often involves animals in some way

Yes. There are some religious and secular rituals that involve animals. Though none have been featured in Re: Shattered Memories yet.

Among the Horse Clan, an infant is introduced to the herd *and* the humans at the same time, all one clan, on about day 3 of their life. They are bonded with their colt or filly as soon as possible, depending on who is born when.

#MarchWorldBuilders 14: Does your world feature any rituals involving animals? Are they sacrificed or consumed?

I'm sure there are, but that's one I haven't put thought to.

Which is a good reason to play these games. 😀

Book back cover - the background is a view of planet Earth from space, largely obscured by many smaller pictures and text.

The top two thirds of the cover show outer space in black - the lower third shows cloud cover of about 20% revealing a mix of greens and blues, and indistinct divisions of land and sea - the horizon is prominent with various shades of hazy blues and whites.

Top banner blurb

Dominated by horses and ships, 400 years in the future looks a lot like 200 years in the past.

KristalClear, NutJob and CandiCrush grow up in a world with no oil, no cars and no internet.

Middle

There are 18 headshots resembling passport photos showing the 3 main characters slightly larger than the 15 secondary characters. The headshots are colour pencil sketches, pale grey background, each in a grey picture frame. The character name is given beneath.

The collection of pictures ends with the text - Turn to page XXVII to see the character profiles.

Bottom banner

A bar code is positioned to the right, with text wrapped to the left of that and below.

The blurb says

Climate Change

Famine

Decimation

Mass Migration

With London under water in 2450AD the new capital is Lancaster.

The people of Wolfland are plagued by the pirates who operate out of Worringfolk. They’re continually disrupting the trade routes across the Irish Sea. That’s where MaxChaos, HayWire and BarmyWaffle come in.

Demi-real, demi-dystopia with a touch of easy-going juvenile humour!

14: In Karnassia (co-created with @jmaxwell-author.bsky.social), the Valestrals have a few related to the New Year and seasonal change, but "involving animals" in this case usually means the ritual sacrifice of an appropriate animal to curry favor with the gods around the time...

Scribes & Makers A hashtag game on Mastodon about writing and other creative activities

Is there one place where at the start of the month I can see them all, see what's coming up - a bit like the #ScribesAndMakers system?

Popular rituals? Not a lot. There's the fireworks on winter solstice day that features animals, but that's kind of cheating.

There *are* alchemical rituals involving animals. One powerful alchemy user can't seem to be trusted near animals without *changing* them.

You wouldn't believe how much animal sacrifice goes on here and you wouldn't believe how much the gods don't care. People sacrifice certain animals (different ones in different places) before certain events for no result but if it keeps them believing, the gods are fine with it.

Kind of... it hasn't appeared in a story yet though.

But @typewriterlizard.bsky.social asked me about dragons the other day. It's a fair question. I'm Welsh, the story is set in Wales, it has knights etc. So I got a bit inspired.

Replies Welcome!

Depends on the Biyeho ritual, there may be animal blood used to decorate the priest/ess but for stronger offerings, an animal may be sacrificed during the ritual. It's not common, but mostly it's small animals and pests that are used. But if you REALLY wanted a god's attention...
