A tale of ash, a penguin, a vampire and oddly enough a dragon. Again he battled with the mower. His wife called from the open window: “It’s too tall for that mower, it would work!” An image started playing in his mind: a series of men, each bearing a scythe, moving down a line, cutting the crass in long rhythmic, sweeping arcs. He definitely needed new equipment to tackle this. After he finally managed to cut the damned grass, he let it dry in the sun. It didn’t take long, and then he gathered them all up and placed it in the stone-fireplace they had in the front yard. Though they had hardly ever used it. He set it to blaze until only ash remained. Ash, through the cycle of renewal becomes fertilizer for his field and plants. Nourishment which he spread in his garden. His wife didn’t keep him company during his work with the ash, her face filled with repulsion as she looked at him touch and spread the ash around. She couldn’t get the image out of her mind: ash was trash, filthy, dirty, yucky. She’d never been able to touch it. Her trauma was too real. As a child she’d seen her father stake a vampire. After the poor creature had screamed its last scream - he’d burned the body. The ash, there had been so much ash. It had haunted her for her entire life. Filling her with repulsion, even now, just thinking about it. The horror when she realized her husband had sprinkled some ash on the dinner table – well knowing she’d be repulsed by it. He just thought it a bit of mischief, and that it perhaps would help her get over her aversion, and she’d have a laugh with him. Her anger though, blazed. “You don’ t care that I grew up with a vampire hunter, that filthy race of bloodsuckers. I couldn’t do it. I was a cheat; I found it too repulsive.” She sucked in a breath. “It’s not fun! And definitely not just ‘a bit of mischief’!” she screamed at her husband.
