Desert town architecture

I have images of towers of native rock, carved by magic or grown out of the ground. Shaped by the wind and the will of their makers.
Secret places below bare plains where monsters of the far past are still bound.

What we see in my #WIP isn't the whole picture.

Kharzuun City is a mix of 1910s Chicago and Las Vegas run by satyrs who aren't locals.

The part of Delamar we see is hyper religious clockwork temples cut off from the modern world.

I have two deserts in Sigils of Redemption (Book 3 and my #WIP):

Kharvala/Alderia is a frozen desert similar to Mongolia's Gobi Dessert. Locals are nomadic, but there's a few cities, industry and now a quarry.

I gave up on #SeptemberWorldBuilders because I was crashing out hardcore, but #OctoberWorldBuilders looks promising. Specifically because 10/3 is my birthday.

Outside the attic window, Nia squatted on scorching tiles, the sunshade barely protecting her from the midday sun. She prepared the bones as she read over Papa’s journal, making sure she remembered what to do next. She knew this all by heart, had even corrected an error in his notes, but it was comforting, having him here.

Nia watched the kettle cook away the meat, poured the broth into another bowl and replaced the water. This new charm wouldn’t last as long, the bones simmered, not buried, nor exposed to the light of the sun and moons, but Nia had little time to leave them to the flies and worms to sort out. She extinguished the heatingstone and set the bones aside to dry in the sun.

Day 30 #SeptemberWorldbuilders

One thing I really like in fictional worlds, fantasy or sci-fi, are detailed and nuanced religions. Rituals, beliefs, holidays and festivals, values, taboos…all those elements go so far in fleshing out a world or culture.

30) World building
Personally, I like to see world building worked naturally into a piece of fiction. I've read far too many books (mostly light novels) that have too much text dedicated to blunt and uninspired world building.

I don't really think about tropes when reading, but I've noticed them more and more. I like tropes like HEA and Found Family and love to see them in more genres. I'd like to see a good EtL rather than the lukewarm version that's popular lately. And more Platonic Love.

What I want to see more of?
FMC with ACTUAL flaws.
MMC who isn't the traditional masculine type.
Less "chosen-one" tropes
More morally-gray characters and decisions

Day 30: The worldbuilding element I'm always happy to see are the marks history have left on the environment. Traces of a past that the characters might not know, that isn't relevant to the story, but hint at a deep past.
I've tried to use it in my own books as well.

Tropes I like

My absolute favorite kind of character is a research wizard. Someone who is so in love with magic that they MUST know how it works. Sure, eye of newt, but left or right? And what kind of newt? Does tapioca work instead?

Don't just say, "This society doesn't use money, Captain Kirk!" Explore why they don't, what they use instead, and the pros and cons of this system.
Why do they do this weird religious ritual? How does their different family structure benefit them?
Make it believable!
