Upward view of the Frauenkirche on Nuremberg’s main market square. The richly ornamented Gothic sandstone façade rises against a cloud-filled sky. At the center is a large blue-and-gold clock with a radiant sun motif. Beneath it, a small balcony and sculpted figures frame the famous mechanical clock display. Tall pointed windows with tracery, carved reliefs, and delicate pinnacles emphasize the verticality of the church tower and the intricate medieval craftsmanship. ⸻ About the church: The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) was built between 1352 and 1362 under Emperor Charles IV as an imperial church for the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg. It stands on the Hauptmarkt, the city’s central square, and was intended as a visible symbol of imperial power and devotion. Architecturally, it is a prime example of Gothic brick-and-sandstone architecture, with a carefully composed west façade designed to face public ceremonies on the square. Over the centuries, the church has been restored several times, most notably after heavy damage during World War II, preserving its historic appearance while incorporating careful reconstruction. The “Männleinlaufen” (the little men running): Every day at 12:00 noon, the clock above the main portal comes to life in a short mechanical spectacle known as the Männleinlaufen. Seven small electors (Kurfürsten) emerge and process around the seated Emperor Charles IV, reenacting the Golden Bull of 1356—the imperial decree that defined the rules for electing the Holy Roman Emperor. The figures bow as they pass the emperor, visually expressing loyalty and order within the empire. This charming yet highly symbolic display has been delighting locals and visitors for centuries and remains one of Nuremberg’s most beloved daily traditions.
Love how this façade turns history into a daily ritual: at noon the little figures “walk” again.

Flower beds in front of the former servants’ quarters now housing a shop, cafe, second hand bookshop and the former kitchens. The church is right next to the estate and the church spire can be seen with a clock face. The estate workers and owners used the church, I imagine some still do.

Photograph taken some years ago in the grounds of Erdigg Hall and Gardens near Wrexham. The site is run by the National Trust. A blue garden clock sits high up on a fancy pink-red brick wall which has multiple curves on top. Below are roses and in front is a topiary bush and a couple of low level formal flower beds in a neatly mowed lawn. At right angles is the edge of the huge country house. Well worth a visit if you're out and about nearby. Both the grounds and the house are great.

The Jantar Mantar is a collection of 19 astronomical instruments built by the Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh founder of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The monument was completed in 1734 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is next to the City Palace (Pink Palace) and Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds). Photograph shows a stone sundial.

This large clock was installed in 1883. It has representations of the sun, moon and stars in various areas. The face of the clock is over 8 feet in diameter. The case is black with red and gold scroll work around it and a line of fleur-de-lis across the top. The case has a peak at the top with ornamental metalwork around it, a red sun at the top and a gold sun above that. The roman numerals are black, as are the hands. There are four gold suns across the bottom of the case.

The clock inside the Musée d'Orsay, in Paris. It was originally a railway station built 1898-2000. The clock is ornate, the entire structure in the Beaux-Arts style. There are windows surrounding the large clock and people on the walkways below.

Photograph of the top section of the grandfather clock face posted earlier today. Image taken on my tiptoes with the phone held above my head! At the bottom of the image is 'ten-to' through to 'ten-past' in both Roman numerals and numbers on a silvery arc. Above that is another arc of smaller numbers (not a clue what they are for as the sequence reads 0, 5, 29). Below that is a beautiful scene of the moon hiding behind a golden globe. Clock is on a corridor downstairs at the fantastic Tudor stately home, Speke Hall, in Liverpool.
