A male Dark-edged Bee-fly feeding from a grape hyacinth flower. He is a large fly with a rounded body covered in mid-brown hair, and a hairy face. He has long, thin legs and a very long proboscis, which he holds out in front like a narwhal's tusk. He has brown eyes, which meet each other on top of his head, and his wings have a dark, scalloped mark along the leading edge.

Dark-edged Bee-fly, male. I do love these cheeky chaps - they whizz around with their probosis sticking out and snacking on the spring flowers, the females lay their eggs in solitary bee so nests. 5/3/26 N Cotswolds garden #beeflywatch

Normally Dark-edged Bee-flies continue well into May and there are records for June and even July, but they seem to have peaked early this year #BeeFlyWatch

Photo of a dark-edged beefly on a blade of bright green grass bathed in sunlight. The beefly is chubby and very fuzzy in a caramel brown fuzz, long proboscis pointing upward, elegant long wings half black half white sparkling under the light.

Distribution maps showing the records in 2025 for Dark-edged and Dotted Bee-flies.

2/4 #BeeFlyWatch records in 2025 have come in from across the expected range. The first dates this year were early - not exceptionally so in England, but Scotland had its earliest ever Dark-edged Bee-fly record on 14 March.

Good news for bee-flies! They have been reported much more frequently this year, and in mid-April we have already had more 2025 records than we did for the whole of 2024, for both Dark-edged and Dotted Bee-flies. This is likely to be due to the much sunnier weather this year. #BeeFlyWatch 1/4

After the initial Disney princess feeling, I spotted the reason why this little one wasn’t flying away… it couldn’t, as one of its wings hadn’t properly formed 🥺

Still a privilege to have such a close-up look at one of these beautiful fluffy flies.

I'm probably a bit late to the #beeflywatch party, but I was pleased to see my first Bombylius major (Dark-edged Bee-fly) of the year in a local park walking back from the dentist this morning.
