In Canada’s #BorealForest, an absence of cultural burns may have also contributed to infestations of mountain pine beetles, which kill off trees and leave the region vulnerable to fire. (7/8)

A single small bird perches on the thin stems of a low shrubby willow against the blurred backdrop of a snowy wetland. Its belly is toward us so we see mostly the underside which is whitish in centre with buff sides, the light grey underside of the tail and a distinct black cap and black throat like two triangles that meet at the tips where the beak is, white triangles extending out across the cheeks between the two black patches. It has a small pointy black bill and a laser focussed black eye.

Two small birds perch on the thin stems of a low shrubby dwarf birch in a snowy wetland area, while a third launches itself from centre toward the right, its wings extended downward as it flaps. Farther back there are more bits of dwarf birch and willow with a dark mixed wood farther back still.

We've fed Chickadees on some cold days + they've become very bold: approaching us very keenly to beg for more food. This little bunch actually mobbed me when I was out in the bush to get firewood a few days ago-swooping close enough to land on me #birds #nature #Alberta #Canada 🌿📷 #BorealForest

Leafless trees in midwinter stand among downed wood in an open snowy area. Thick fog compresses depth, turning the distant forest into pale silhouettes.

Bright green aurora borealis fills the entire night sky in sweeping arcs and curtains above a dark boreal forest in interior Alaska. Tall, leafless birch trees and several narrow spruce trees rise as black silhouettes from the bottom and left edges of the frame, their branches reaching upward toward the light. The aurora forms layered bands and soft vertical rays, with brighter concentrated patches near the center and right side of the sky. Faint stars are visible between the green light, and a small streak of light appears on the right side of the sky.

Some nights, the aurora doesn’t just glow. It takes over the entire northern sky.

On very active evenings, the boreal forest feels small. The trees become silhouettes under something vast and constantly moving.

Forests Are Steadily Creeping North, and That's Not a Good Thing — VICE The effects of climate change are happening now. Some are subtle, like a new type of bird that possibly only exists because of climate change.

#NASA Goddard Space Flight Center found that between 1985 and 2020, #treecover across the #borealforest biome is increasingly retreating northward in a desperate race to keep pace with its preferred environment."

Image showing distribution of boreal forest cover and density trends from 1985 to 2020. There is a significant upward trend, r2 = 0.83 , slope 0.185x where x is % tree cover

A new study using the longest high-resolution satellite record of tree cover has found that the boreal forest has expanded by 12% and shifted northward over the past four decades....The results show an expansion of approximately 0.84 million square kilometres […]

A small log lies on the forest floor, almost completely covered with moss- in places an inch or two/several centimetres deep with fine fronds showing, in other spots flatter patches work to cover new areas. Several patches of silver-blue lichen stand out on the green moss. The log is surrounded by faded dry leaves with occasional twigs and bits of larger branches. Most of the view is in shadow, but a shaft of light reaches the middle of the log, making the green almost glow and also lighting several arching stems of dry palest gold grass in front of and also draping over the log.

Afternoon winter sun makes a nearly white starburst in the mostly blue sky, left of centre just above a line of mostly shadowed mixed woods the cross the rear of the image. The camera lens turns the farther rays of light to white dashes in the sky and glowing gems against the trees. In the foreground a melt smoothed set of tire tracks crosses the stiff melted and refrozen snow with more snow behind giving way to low willows and scattered small spruce. In front of the tracks much of the snow has melted showing dry golden grass. At the right we see part of the trunks of several aspens, the bark a mix of smooth grey-white and rough raised black branch scars small and large.

For me it's *always* about the light (and line, and texture!) but that may be even more true in winter when the colours are fewer and the lower sun gives dramatic light much of the day.

#World: Boreal Forests Expand North

Scientists from NASA, using almost a quarter million Landsat satellite images from 1984 to 2020, have confirmed that Earth's boreal forest is moving northward and growing in size.

A grainy hillside during a light snow flurry beneath a pale sky. Low shrubs in muted reds, browns, and blues cover the slope, with a narrow rocky and icy path winding upward. Sparse, wind-shaped evergreen trees stand along the ridge. Falling snow softens the colors and gives the scene a quiet, dreamlike mood.

It’s #TreeTomeTuesday. This week’s book is about the #borealforest - its importance to our planet, how it’s disappearing, & possible solutions to the dilemma. The author is the founder/director of #BlackMountainsCollege, which teaches skills for mitigating & adapting to climate change.

Winter moment.Timeless.

Built circa 1940, we moved this solid storage building from our old farmstead into the yard. New shingles, siding holes filled, placed off the ground on sturdy wood skids... 20 years on, it's still standing tall.

Burn scars line the trees from a past wildfire. Winter has filled the understory with snow, while fresh plants begin growing through what was burned.

A vertical photograph of a winter night scene in interior Alaska. A narrow, bright green ribbon of aurora stretches diagonally from the upper left toward the center of the sky, fading slightly as it descends. The sky is deep blue-black and filled with small, sharp stars. Below, a dense stand of black spruce trees fills the lower half of the image. Every branch is heavily coated in fresh white snow, giving the trees a thick, sculpted appearance. The forest floor is also blanketed in smooth, undisturbed snow. The scene is lit softly by moonlight, creating gentle contrast between the glowing aurora, the dark tree trunks, and the bright snow.

Close view of a small plant on the forest floor (Maianthemum canadense Canada Mayflower). Several papery dry pinky gold spear tip shaped leaves clasp a single short stem. The leaves have many fine veins running lengthwise, giving them an almost pleated appearance. The stem is pale gold, tipped with a number of tiny spikes that would have held flowers in spring, which were not fertilised. The small handful that were pollinated have now produced shiny bright red juicy berries (which are edible- very sweet, but also bitter a fun nibble, probably wouldn't be a great idea to eat too many). The background is a blur of dried leaves, spruce cones and scales and one autumn gold leaf. A faint violet film effect has been used and edges are blurred with a white vignette applied.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 14 I dug back again for these images- this time late September- yet these berries seem tailor made for the winter festive season! This is a late spring flowering plant but berries fully ripen rather late in autumn #nature #wildflowers #NativePlants #BorealForest #Alberta 📷🌿

Looking out the side window of the moving vehicle, across a snowy pasture with bits of dry grass showing through in places. Less than halfway across is a dark post and wire fence then another white stretch. On the other side we can just see another fence at the edge of a dense mixed wood of bare poplars and spruce. The trees are variably covered in frost (from ice fog) and snow with dark boughs showing through in places and some dark shadows between the trees, but the overall effect, especially the front trees, is of white trees. The sky is a soft blue and a white vignette effect has been applied to the edges of the image.

Looking up at several trees- an aspencomes from lower right and angles up into the centre with a pale trunk with black markings where branches emerge or once did; at the top it has a tangle of bare branches and fine twigs, outlined against the featureless whitish sky. To the right we see part of another poplar, smaller and dead with no fine twigs. Behind and to the left, not reaching as high as the aspen, we see the upper 2/3 of a large spruce tree, dark but frost lightened. I've applied some 'light leak' filters which have added random faint blobs and zones of colour, some reddish some blue-green-which kind of hint at holiday lights. The corners have a dark vignette effect applied.
