It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Deep ruby in color with a reddish rim. Nose of black currants, blackberries, black cherries, cedar, coffee, toast, light vanilla, dark chocolates, peppercorn, licorice, light earth, herbs and spices. Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with cooked plums, currants, cedar, vanilla, spices, espresso, earth, tobacco leaf, herbs and peppercorn. Long finish with medium tannins and tangy cherries. This is a young Bordeaux blend from Yountville in Napa Valley. Rich and extracted. Dense and fruit forward. Chewy and interesting. This Single Vineyard is very dry right out of the bottle, and better after 90 minutes of airtime. Nicely balanced and complex. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years. Good by itself or with food. A blend of 51% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec. 14.2% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $80.

Strong nose of red fruits with light cedar, earth, tobacco leaf, black pepper, herbs and black tea. Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with cherries, plums, light oak, spices, chocolates, licorice, tobacco leaf, herbs and peppercorn. Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a delicious Merlot from Napa Valley. Fruity and rich. Complex and entertaining. Good right out of the bottle, and better after 90 minutes of airtime. This Single Vineyard Merlot is elegant and nicely balanced. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. I had different vintages of this wine and it is very consistent. Easy drinking and good by itself as a sipping wine. 100% Merlot grapes were aged in French oak barrels. A tiny production of only 300 bottles. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $100.

Pellet Estate Pellet Vineyard Merlot 2018, Napa Valley, California It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Inky in color with a short reddish rim. Fruity nose with cooked plums, cedar, chocolates, black pepper, spices, light earth and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with blackberries, black plums, currants, cedar, licorice, cola, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, spices, light cinnamon and peppercorn. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious Single Vineyard Merlot from Napa valley. Elegant and nicely balanced. Fruit forward, rich and complex. This 7 year old Merlot is drinking beautifully now and will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. The nose feels very fresh and complex. Showing a touch of Right Bank Bordeaux feel, which makes it more interesting. Needed an hour in the decanter to open up properly and balance itself out. Good by itself as a sipping wine and good with food. Will pair nicely with lamb chops or grilled meats. 100% Merlot grapes were aged in French oak barrels. A tiny production of only 300 bottles. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $100.

Chateau Tour Saint Joseph Cru Bourgeois Haut Médoc 2012, Bordeaux, France It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim. Beautiful nose of black currants, plums, rhubarb, cooked cherries, light wood, spices, dark chocolates, black pepper and licorice. Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cherries, oak, spices, chocolates, tobacco leaf, coffee, licorice, peppercorn, earth and herbs. Short finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries. This 13 year old Merlot based blend from Bordeaux is still drinking nicely, although will not last long. Easy drinking and complex. Good right out of the bottle, and better after 30 minutes of airtime. I really enjoyed the nose once it opened up. A good food wine that paired nicely with the charcuterie board. A blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. 12.5% alcohol by volume. 90 points. $25 (current vintage).

Château Lascombes Chevalier de Lascombes Margaux 2022, Bordeaux, France It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Dark purple in color with a short reddish rim. Fruity nose of black currants, blackberries, sweet cherries, light cedar, earth, herbs, light vegetables and chocolates. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black plums, cooked cherries, spices, chocolates, coffee, peppercorn, licorice, pencil lead and earth. Medium finish with round tannins and tangy cherries. This is a tasty Merlot based blend from Margaux. Elegant, complex and nicely balanced. This second wine from Château Lascombes is rich and fruit forward. Feels like a Right Bank Bordeaux with a touch of New World. I had the 2018 not too long ago and this one is drinking much better now. Would be nice to revisit it in a couple of years. Easy drinking and good by itself or with food. A blend of 68% Merlot and 32% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 16 months in used French oak barrels. 14% alcohol by volume. 90 points. $40.

Petrolo Galatrona Val d'Arno di Sopra 2015, Tuscany, Italy It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Dark ruby in color with a short reddish/brick rim. Beautiful nose of black currants, cooked plums, light cedar, black tea, Mediterranean spices, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf, herbs, light earth, cola and black pepper. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cherries, oak, spices, chocolates, coffee, black pepper and black tea. Medium minus on the finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty Merlot from Tuscany. Rich, extracted and still showing lots of fruit notes. This 10 year old Merlot needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly, but drinking nicely now. Complex and nicely balanced. The nose is just gorgeous, but the palate doesn’t quite match its complexity. Needed 2 hours in the decanter to open up and show the beautiful nose. Robert Parker 96 points. Wine Spectator 95 points. This Super Tuscan is a little disappointing, as it received great reviews, but I had it blind, so it is what it is. Good as a sipping wine and better with food. 100% Merlot grapes were aged in (33% new) French Oak barrels for 18 months. 13.5% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $120.

Beautiful oaky nose with black fruits and chocolate notes. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, black plums, cherries, spices, cedar, licorice, vanilla, espresso, cola, light herbs, earth, chocolates, tobacco and black pepper. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious Merlot from Pomerol. Soft and elegant. Rich and fruit forward. Nicely balanced and complex with a nice mouthfeel. This 5 years old Merlot is fresh and young tasting. Drinks like a soft New World Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of old world. Will continue to age nicely in the next 25 years. Has good potential to become a 95 point wine. I've had a few vintages of this wine and it is always enjoyable. A great sipping wine. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 16 months in (80% new) French Oak barrels. 15% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $125.

This 11 year old Merlot still feels fresh and engaging, with a lot of power to last even longer. This Single Vineyard Merlot is extracted and fruit forward. The alcohol is nicely integrated by now. Fruity nose and medium in body with medium acidity. Dry and fruit forward on the palate with nice complexity. Showing blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, spices, vanilla, cedar, licorice, cola, chocolates, herbs, earth, light tobacco leaf and peppercorn. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious Merlot based Bordeaux blend from Napa Valley. Rich and fruit forward. Soft and smooth. Still very young, and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly, although very approachable right now. A delicious wine that will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years. Needs 3 hours in the decanter to open up properly, which I didn't have, as it was finished too quickly. Very elegant, and very enjoyable by itself as a sipping wine. Will also pair very nicely with a big piece of steak or Barbecue meats. A blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. A small production of only 8 barrels. 14.9% alcohol by volume. 93 points. $170.

Clos Labarde Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2015, France It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Dark ruby in color with a reddish rim. Fruity nose and medium plus in body, with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity. Showing plums, currants, oak, vanilla, licorice, chocolates, herbs, spices, earth, light vegetables, tobacco leaf and peppercorn. Tangy finish with round tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty 9 year old Merlot from Saint Emilion in Bordeaux. Rich and fruit forward. A little tart right out of the bottle, and needed 90 minutes of airtime to open up properly. Wine Enthusiasts 91 points. I also had the 2016 vintage, but it was a lot younger. Time has worked in favor of this great 2015 vintage. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years. Good by itself, and better with food. A blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $50.

Chateau Haut Cardinal Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2014, Bordeaux, France It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Deep ruby in color with a reddish/ brick rim. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with nice complexity. Showing currants, plums, cooked cherries, spices, oak, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, earth and light vegetables. Short finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries. This 11-year-old Merlot from Bordeaux is a little unbalanced, but drinkable nonetheless. Elegant and complex, but lost some of its fruits by now. Good right out of the bottle, and better after an hour of airtime. I had this vintage 2 years ago and it is drinking a little better now. A good food wine that I paired with pizza. 100% Merlot grapes from 70 year old vines, were aged in French oak barrels (70% new). A small production of only 9,000 bottles. 13% alcohol by volume. 89 points. $35 (current vintage).

Strong nose of black plums, cooked cherries, currents, cedar, licorice, light vanilla, light earth, peppercorn, mediterranean spices and dark chocolates. Medium plus in body and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with cherries, plums, raspberries, sweet strawberries, light oak, licorice, chocolates, tobacco, herbs, spices, earth and peppercorn. Spicy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This 7 year old Merlot from Napa Valley is fruit forward and rich. Elegant and complex with a soft mouthfeel. Needs a couple of hours to open up properly, when more red fruits show up. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years. I had this vintage 4 years ago, and the nose is much nicer now. Really enjoyed it once it opened up. This Single Vineyard is spicy and entertaining. Tangy and interesting. Feels like a Napa Merlot, with a Right Bank Bordeaux twist. Tasty, and good by itself or with food. A tiny production of only 300 bottles. 14.5% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $100.

Very pretty nose with black fruits, cedar, licorice, light vanilla, tobacco, chocolates, coffee, Indian spices, cola and light black tea. Full-bodied with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with sweet raspberries, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, chocolates, toast, light vanilla, dark coffee, Indian spices, light cola licorice and peppercorn. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious 9 year old Merlot from Columbia Valley. Rich and extracted. Spicy and entertaining. Peaking now and will continue to drink nicely in the next 5 years. Good right out of the bottle, and better after 3 hours of airtime. Nicely balanced with a soft mouthfeel. Smooth and elegant. Fruit forward and tangy. The high alcohol is well integrated by now. Good by itself as a sipping wine. A blend of 75% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 22 months in (85% new) French Oak barrels. 14.9% alcohol by volume. 93 points. $75.
