Chateau du Tailhas Pomerol 2008, Bordeaux, France It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back! Dark ruby/ purple in color with a wide reddish/ brick rim. Pretty nose of red and black fruits with light wood, herbs, light chocolates, earth, coffee and black pepper. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, black plums, cooked cherries, light oak, tobacco leaf, herbs, peppercorn, earth, dark chocolates and black tea. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a delicious Merlot from Pomerol. Well balanced and complex. Tangy and tasty. Rich and elegant, with enough fruits to compliment the earth notes. Spicy and entertaining. This 18 year old is drinking at its peak now, and will continue to drink nicely in the next few years. I've had a few vintages of this wine, and it is much better with age. A good sipping wine that will also pair nicely with food. A blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 12 months in (50% new) French oak barrels. 13% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $80.

Krug Grande Cuvée 171th Edition Brut Champagne, France Lemon in color with a golden hue. Pretty nose with flowers, yeast, citrus, lemons, green apples, limes, spices, herbs and minerals. Medium bodied with high acidity, and medium sized bubbles. Dry on the palate with limes, grapefruits, citrus, green apples, light earth, minerals, herbs, sea salt and light spices. Long finish with limes and light herbs. This is a delicious Champagne, but feels extremely young. Elegant and nicely balanced. Complex and interesting. Rich and tangy. Soft and smooth. Much better after 45 minutes of airtime, and better when not too cold. Will continue to age nicely in the next 20 years. Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food. A blend of 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier. 12.5% alcohol by volume. 92 points. $250.

Sweet on the palate with high acidity to balance the sugars. Showing melons, tropical fruits, apples, light earth, guava, herbs, spices, papaya and honey notes. Long finish with herbs and tropical fruits. This is a gorgeous sweet wine from Bordeaux. Sexy, seductive and fresh. Creamy and buttery. Showing great potential, but oh so young. Already delicious and complex. Round, opulent and powerful. Loved the nose once it opened up (20 minutes in the glass). Rich and extracted. Fruit forward and intense, yet elegant. Well balanced with a soft mouthfeel. Good by itself as a sipping wine, or with food. Drunk from a Magnum. A blend of 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon Blanc. The Vice Wines Torie's Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024, Los Carneros, California Purple/ reddish in color with medium plus intensity. Fruity nose of black currants, plums, cherries, oak, sweet candy, light vanilla and lots of chocolate notes. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with plums, currants, oak, chocolates, black pepper, light herbs and spices. Medium finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries. This young Pinot Noir from Napa Valley is already drinking nicely. Rich, juicy and fruit forward. Elegant and nicely balanced. This Single Vineyard Pinot Noir is showing nice complexity with a soft mouthfeel. Good right out of the bottle, and gets earthier as it opens up. It needs about an hour to open up properly, but we didn’t have that luxury as it finished way too quickly. Would be nice to revisit it in a few years. Easy drinking, and good by itself or with food. Paired very nicely with pizza. 100% Pinot Noir grapes were aged for 9 months in all new French Oak barrels. A small production of only 3,000 bottles. Unfiltered and unfined. 14.1% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $68.

The Walls Vineyards Stanley Groovy Lip Stinger 2023, Washington State Nice color of lemon with a golden hue. Nose of citrus, lemons, apples, earth, spices, limes and minerals. Medium bodied with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with grapefruits, lemons, green apples, spices, bitter herbs and light earth. Tangy finish with limes and spices. This is a very tasty white Rhone blend from Washington State. Elegant and nicely balanced. Spicy, delicate and entertaining. Feels like a White Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A lovely surprise. Good right out of the bottle, gets earthier as it opens up, and the high alcohol is not noticeable. Good by itself or with food, and paired very nicely with the Avocado Tuna Tartar. A blend of 60% Grenache Blanc, 18% Roussanne, 9% Picpoul, 9% Viognier and 4% Marsanne. 14.6% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $32.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries. This 17 year old Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley is still drinking beautifully. Rich and engaging. Elegant, soft and fruit forward. Beautifully balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Needed 90 minutes in the bottle to open up properly and show great complexity, with good structure. This gorgeous Cabernet is still drinking at its peak, but will not get better from this point on. Will continue to drink nicely in the next 7 years. Col Solare Winery Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, Washington State It is time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a delicious one from Red Mountain. Purple in color with a wide reddish rim. Elegant nose with blue and black fruits, light cedar, light earth and chocolates notes. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cooked cherries, dried figs, light cedar, licorice, light vanilla, tobacco, peppercorn, espresso, chocolates and earth. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain. Elegant and rich. Complex, spicy and entertaining. This 8 year old Cabernet is drinking close to its peak. Fruit forward and easy drinking right out of the bottle, and will continue to age nicely in the next 7 years. Has good potential to become a 94 point wine. Showing a great mouthfeel with nice balance and elegance. Interesting enough to drink by itself and talk about. Wine Enthusiasts 91 points. Light bodied with medium plus acidity. Dry on the palate with fresh cherries, strawberries, cranberries, bitter herbs, spices, light earth and black pepper. Tangy finish with soft tannins and tart cherries. This is an easy drinking Pinot Noir from Anderson Valley in California. Nicely balanced with mild complexity and a soft mouthfeel. Loved the low alcohol here. Good right out of the bottle, and gets earthier after 90 minutes of airtime. Still young and needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly. Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 years. Good right out of the bottle, and good by itself or with food. A good porch wine and good for the pool too. 100% Pinot Noir grapes were aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels. A small production of 650 cases. 11.5% alcohol by volume. 89 points. $49.

Dry on the palate with blueberries, plums, cooked cherries, oak, licorice, spices, chocolates, tobacco, earth and herbs. Nice finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a very tasty Merlot from Pomerol. Complex and interesting. Spicy, elegant and fruit forward. Drinking very nicely now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 7 years. I had the 2016 vintage last year and it was even better. Would be nice to revisit it in a few years. Nicely balanced and easy drinking. Good by itself or with food. A blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Aged for 12 months in (50% new) French oak barrels. 14% alcohol by volume. 91 points. $65.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries. This is a delicious red blend from Bandol. Fruit forward, and still very young. However, it is very approachable right now. Will continue to age nicely in the next 15 years. This Single Vineyard Mourvèdre based blend is very interesting. Well balanced and complex with a nice mouthfeel. A good quality wine. A tasty sipping wine that will pair nicely with food too. A blend of 50% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 26% Cinsault and 4% Syrah. Fruity nose of black currants, plums, cherries, light oak, spices, licorice, dark chocolates and black pepper. Medium plus in body with medium acidity. Dry and fruit forward on the palate with black plums, black currants, light oak, spices, coffee, peppercorn, dark chocolates and light herbs. Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries. This young Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain is starting to drink very nicely now, but needs a few years in the bottle to mature properly. Shows good structure with a nice mouthfeel. Nicely balanced and complex. Needs time to open up properly. I gave it 4 hours in the decanter. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.
