Hey #bugstodon this is not a drill! I found a pair of mantids just before the head-eating phase of their relationship in my own backyard! (They're upside down on the roof of an aging gazebo, a large ~6cm green female and a brownish male roughly a third her size.)

A small bright metallic green beetle clinging to the pale green calyx of a cowslip flower head. The yellow flower itself is going over and is part closed and part eaten, probably by the beetle itself.
And a final bug for tonight… a Cryptocephalus hypochaeridis (common name unknown) on a cowlslip (Primula veris). I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen this kind of beetle before, despite how brightly coloured they are. Bit small for the iphone camera to do a good job.

A small predatory soldier fly resting on the stalks of some cow parsley. The body of the fly is long and thin and dark grey with black stripes, with faint copper-coloured highlights.
A very bee-like fly, whose wings have a dark saw-tooth pattern on the leading edge. A long, straight proboscis extends into the middle of a dandelion.

A soldier fly (Eudioctria?) on cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris), a dark-edged bee fly (Bombylius major) on a dandelion (I don’t know what kind) and a tree bumblebee (Bombus hypnorum) on some white dead nettle (Lamium album).
