A square, gray-toned satellite map that -- thanks to a scale bar labeled "10km" -- can be seen to cover an approximately 70 by 70 kilometer area. The terrain is mountainous, and a portion of a large river snakes across the map from middle right to center bottom. Labels for "Sinicik" (upper middle) and Kâhta (near center) can be read. A bright blue line starts near the upper left portion of the map and runs eastward to near the middle before turning south-southeastward to eventually end in the large river at lower right. Partway along this clue line a large orange dot and smaller green bow-tie symbol can be seen, but they are not labeled.

Interview Lauren Rever – Soundscapes of Digital History Lauren Rever, a public historian and fellow for digital history at the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C. in 2024/2025, initially engaged with digital history in the context of her dissertation, which involved the mapping of school students' field trips to Washington, D.C. As a public historian with extensive experience in museum work, she discusses the distinctions and parallels the approaches to digital and public history. Additionally, she emphasizes the challenges encountered by researchers with non-digital backgrounds in adapting to the field of digital history and the discernment of appropriate application of digital competencies. Lauren also draws attention to the absence of digital training in many humanities study programs.

📣 Out now: New Episode #Soundscapes of #DigitalHistory 🎧

AAS2026 Annual Conference, Sat. March 14, 2-3:30pm, location: VCC, room 203.
Panel # 827: "New Approaches to Colonial Archives in South Asian Digital Humanities"
Discipline: History
Abstract: As Roopika Risam and Rahul Gairola note in their recent survey of S. Asian digital humanities, "the digital afterlives of colonialism shape the formation of the digital cultural record and, in turn, the cultural memory of humanity" (South Asian Review, 2019). This interdisciplinary panel will present a series of strategies for revisiting colonial archives, interrogating the original format and purpose of extant colonial records and considering how to use digital methodologies to intervene in and break those patterns, rather than replicating them."
