Lateral view of an exuvia of a mayfly
Exuvia of a mayfly seen from above. You can see the rift from which the mature individual emerged.
More detailed view of the mayfly's exuvia
The individual emerged from the moult, with diaphanous wings typically held upright, two large "turban" eyes, long front legs, long cerci (tail-like appendages).
I found a mayfly that had just emerged from its exuvia after moulting!
Photos 1-3: exuvia.
Photo 4: newly moulted individual. Diaphanous wings typically held upright, large "turban" eyes, long cerci (tail-like appendages).
Fascinating!
