Burrowing Mayflies. A thread Part 1: Ephemeridae, Polymitarcyidae, and (Potamanthidae) are three families of mayflies whose ecology is strongly shaped by associations with fine-sediment habitats in rivers and streams and their burrowing habits #Ephemeroptera 1/6

Third taxa - Anthopotamus (Ephemeroptera:Potomanthidae), the "Hackle-Gills". Forked gills projecting laterally, tusks projecting beyond head. Less of a burrower. Still have cool tusks 😊 #Ephemeroptera 6/6

3/4 We assessed if #eDNA can capture the temporal changes of #Ephemeroptera, #Plecoptera, #Trichoptera, and #Diptera.

We found pronounced, cyclic phenological trends in most groups: the communities diverged from spring to summer and then in fall gradually returned closer to the spring state.

Classification of Insects - Ephemeroptera Mayfly (c) Kenny Cro 2008

🎄 Day 8 brings us some Mayfly Magic 🪰

#Ephemeroptera are primitive winged insects that are sensitive to pollution, making them key water quality indicators.

#FunFact: Adult lives can last anywhere from a few hours to just days.
