Photograph of an ornate plaster ceiling at Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire created by F and T Gunby in 1605. The design is rich in embellishment and features swirls and nature-inspired elements. This was highly fashionable at the time. The appointment of Yorkshire craftsmen at a property in the depths of Lancashire may not have been quite so fashionable! Still raised eyebrows when the guide mentioned it! For those not au fait with the Wars of the Roses in English history, Lancashire and Yorkshire have been rivals for centuries, often met on the battlefield, and both have had powerful monarchs on the throne. The houses were united through the marriage of King Henry VII (House of Lancaster) and Princess Elizabeth of York...parents to the increasingly unpleasant husband of six impressive queens (Henry VIII).
