A memory for our friend Soph the Bee Lady aka @soph0517.bsky.social of the summer days when the garden was full of buzzing sounds.
A yellow and black striped buff-tailed Bumble Bee on a Sunflower collects pollen from the deep orange central part of the flower. The insect’s wings are folded back and the the background is of the luscious yellow petals of the Sunflower.
One more from my weekend trawl for the wall calendar project. This time a buff-tailed Bumble Bee on a Sunflower from July for a bit of summer’s warmth on a drab December Sunday.

A Honey Bee clings to the side of a bright red Persicaria flower, its yellow and black body arched close under the bloom while its black limbs hold tight and it concentrates on its task with wings folded back. The background is green and leafy. Persicaria is a native of China but is very popular in English gardens and lasts through the summer and autumn, attracting many pollinators. Its charming common name is Kiss Me Over the Garden Gate. Appropriately, ours is planted near our gate through to the neighbouring garden and the bees often emerge over it on their flight to the plant.

A Western Honey Bee stretches his yellow and black striped body from one yellow pollen-filled Aster flower to the next, gossamer wings folded neatly back as it concentrates on its task. The Aster blooms’ tiny white petals spread beneath the insect like a bed. More flowers can be seen above and the background is a faded green of the plants’ leaves.

Found Clouded Sulphur butterflies on a walk through a wetlands preserve in SW Ontario; lots of aster nectar out there and these translucent little gluttons are gobbling it up. I think this one's a female — black-ringed yellow spots on her wings.

A very focused Bumble bee we saw during our visit to Ightham Mote in Kent today. The garden was buzzing with late activity as the temperature reached 20°C.
Green foliage surrounds an insect that is looking directly at the camera. It has long, slender antennae and sharp spines on its front legs. It’s head is triangular shaped with light tan colored eyes and a tiny darker brown spot in each eye.
There’s something about an insect that can turn its head when you approach, and you KNOW it is looking at you. I love these praying mantis. #nature #insectsofbluesky #prayingmantisofbluesky

A small bumble bee lands on a Persicaria bloom and its wings are still blurred out in motion. The sunlight plays on the rapidly beating wings, making them seem almost solid. Light green leaves and the Persicaria’s bright red flowers add contrasting colours to the scene.
Not the best capture but I like the way this bee’s wings are blurred in motion as it lands on the Persicaria. We still get plenty of visits but they tend to flit from flower to flower, maybe finding that the larder is now almost empty.
