In her right hand she holds a biodegradable and eco-friendly coconut stick broom (nariyal jhadu) to manage the fire, smoke and ash. The smoke produced is an air quality concern for the community and a health hazard for individuals with respiratory issues. Open burning can also pose a significant fire risk, as wind can easily spread the fire to nearby areas. There is, however, very little local interest in composting dry leaves to create nutrient-rich manure for gardens or used as mulch.
