‘Rogue Squadron’ Writer Matthew Robinson Reminisces On a “Great Time” Writing ‘Star Wars’ Script
Matthew Robinson was reported nearly five years ago to be penning the script to Patty Jenkins’ _Rogue Squadron_ , the movie that former Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy announced at the end of 2020, and which was later pushed to the back burner. Jenkins would go on years later to say that it was back in the works, but Lucasfilm never confirmed it, and nothing else ever came of it. Now, Robinson is speaking about the time he got to spend writing that script.
Speaking to _Polygon_ to promote his upcoming film _Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die_ , the writer said the following about it:
> “I had a great time writing it. Patty Jenkins is one of my favorite artists in the world. I think she’s absolutely brilliant. We had a great time working together. I don’t currently know what Lucasfilm wants to do with it. They’re in a pretty big state of flux at the moment, after Kathleen [Kennedy] leaving, and who knows what the future holds for them theatrically.”
He then elaborated a bit more on the project and the personal significance it had for Jenkins as the director:
> “It was a great thrill to write that, and especially to work with Patty, who made it a very personal story. It was very much a movie about fighter pilots. Her father was a fighter pilot. It was very personal to her, and we were trying to tell a really great personal story about fighter pilots and Rogue Squadron pilots in the _Star Wars_ universe. I think we did a great job with it, and I really hope one day we get to see a version of that.”
As Robinson said, the project seems to be in a DOA state. Back in 2024, Jenkins said of it, “I’m now back doing _Rogue Squadron_ “, adding that she owed Lucasfilm a draft. The studio never confirmed it was back on, and Kathleen Kennedy also didn’t discuss it either at _Star Wars_ Celebration or during her exit interview.

Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is _The Lord of the Rings,_ but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as movies from Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
