Hot take: AI can support learning, but it shouldn’t be doing the grading.

Grading done right builds trust and connection. Traditional grading breaks it. Alternative grading restores it.

Where (if anywhere) do you see AI fitting into grading?

What if students aren’t "checked out". What if the system is?

I’ve spent the past couple years rethinking grading: what mastery means, how to make feedback matter, and how to stop chasing points.

What’s one grading shift that’s actually worked for you?

“Mastery grading lowers standards.”

❌ FALSE.

It RAISES them because students don’t get to move on until they actually understand.

My students now ask:
“Can I try that again?”
“Can you tell me what I missed?”

Not:
“How many marks is this worth?”

That shift is everything.

Hot take:

Allowing retakes isn’t “soft” - it’s scientific.
Mastery takes time.

Reassessment isn’t a second chance.
It’s a better snapshot of learning.

If a student can’t redo an assessment, is it really about learning?

Let’s stop pretending “real life doesn’t allow retakes.”
Most of adult life IS retakes.

FYI - for anyone wanting to try alternative grading this semester but feeling short on time to implement it, I *highly* recommend a 0-4 scale. I used it in my 400-level quantum class last semester and it was phenomenal. Happy to answer implementation questions. #alternativegrading

Anyone have any tips for teaching very small classes—like 5-10 students? 200-300 level.

Flipped model? Teaching like an independent study? Feeling much anxiety for Spring. #pedagogy #teaching #alternativegrading

This is a rationale for holistic assessment, in which students reflect on products, processes, and learning/growth/change as interrelated and equally important. In the face of AI, the historical emphasis on product-based outcomes becomes less and less relevant.

Hi Ms Oliver!
I hope you’re doing well! I have one week left of my first year of university and I wanted to update you and also show you one of my projects:) I have officially been accepted to creative industries at ____ which means that I will me majoring in creative industries with a specialization in fashion starting in September. Without your continued support throughout high school I do not think that I would have the confidence to pursue such a “non traditional” major when I was “supposed” to go into law. A LOT of things from your course have benefited me in this first year, and you should tell your students that university professors are using elements of ungrading and they should take it seriously, because profs and TAs don’t give as much feedback as you do! I am currently taking “refashioning history” and my final for this class is a project on a reclaimed beauty, style or dress trend, involving a paper and a digital artifact. I decided to focus on street wear and my paper is heavily influenced by our class discussions of Dr Dre’s halftime show. This is the video I created! I have pulled so much from your course and as I was editing this video today I thought, “I better send this to Ms Oliver, she would like this” lol. Let me know what you think!
Again I hope you are doing great!

Was looking for the address of a former student today when I came across this email from 2023. A great reminder of my
#Ungrading 'why' & motivation to continue despite the many challenges that can sometimes feel like...a lot. 😀 #alternativegrading

1st and 2nd draft attempts of an introductory paragraph based on Nicola Yoon's short story, "Super Human" interspersed with student self-reflection.

Commentary 1: "Nothing to do with the topic thingy, but I really loved this story. The writing was top-tier excellence, and the plot was also amazing. I just really, really liked it."

Commentary 2: (first person pronouns, blocky in parts, not good writing overall, but this was meant to write fast so I could work off of it)

Commentary 3: (this is the best I can do at the moment, but I’m not entirely sure if this is how an essay intro paragraph is supposed to look. I kind of rambled, and I’m not sure if that’s OK. I also don’t like how I did the “basically” part, but I’m unsure as to what else I could put there. I was thinking of “thus”, but I’m not entirely confident that I would use it correctly)

That moment when a Grade 9 shows you they have embraced the self-reflection process 😍 📖 #alternativegrading #EduSky

I have a student that is not progressing based on performance on repeated assessment. I gave written feedback that we should meet so I can help her with this. She just made a 15 minute meeting 😒Pretty sure we need more time than this unless I only give a different assignment. #AlternativeGrading

Small Alternative Grading You can use alternative grading in your class tomorrow

For those new to #AlternativeGrading, here is an interesting article by David Clark (@dccmath.bsky.social)….

“You don’t have to completely blow up your whole assessment system to make a difference.“

Its my 4th year teaching with #AlternativeGrading but I have my largest class yet (41). The combination of retakes/ revisions and a token system is feeling pretty hectic right now. I need to reflect over the break about what might need to be updated with a larger number of students. Thoughts?

Any #ungrading or #alternativeGrading folks who would be up for taking a look at a learning tracker I’ve created? It’s for high school classes. I’m looking for another set of educator eyes who might see some possible pitfalls that I’m missing.

Has anyone tried using standards-based grading in their biology courses? I am interested in exploring, and I would appreciate hearing about others' experiences, especially in large enrollment courses.

I’m presenting a session next week to our faculty on the pros/cons a 0-4 grading scale (instead of 0-100%) & how to “hack” our LMS gradebook to support it. I’m curious if anyone in my network has any resources, or insights with the 0-4 scale they would share with me?

Yes! I’m also happy to talk !

A year or so ago I asked my students what they think they deserved on the course (self assessed) and calculated what they actually scored with traditional grading.

Here are two results…

Super curious if this is what you found. #AlternativeGrading

Oops, almost forgot the punchline!

I know most people’s gut reaction to this is going to me “we should just randomize the grading order” but for me, the bigger upshot of this should be:

"Maybe we need to rethink the entire system of grading in the first place”.
